Synopsis
Venice, 1866, last days of the Austrian occupation. A performance of Il Trovatore in the La Fenice theatre is interrupted by an anti-Austrians protest. Livia Serpieri, a countess who is married to an old nobleman, sees her cousin marquis Roberto Ussoni challenging the Austrian Lieutenant Franz Mahler for a duel. Roberto is arrested and sent to the exile. When Livia meets again Mahler, she falls in love for him and begins a love affair. Soon she is consumed with jealousy. The war forces the lovers apart: Livia’s husband makes her move to their country house. One night, Franz reaches Livia and asks her money in order to bribe the doctors and stay away from the battle field. Livia gives him the money she was holding for Roberto and the patriots. Livia’s betrayal will lead to tragic consequences.

Venezia, 1866, ultimi giorni dell’occupazione austriaca. Una rappresentazione de Il Trovatore alla Fenice è interrotta da una manifestazione antiaustriaca. La contessa Livia Serpieri, sposata a un anziano nobile, vede il cugino, il marchese Roberto Ussoni, sfidare a duello un giovane tenente austriaco, Franz Mahler. Roberto è arrestato ed esiliato. Quando Livia rivede Franz, se ne innamora e diventa la sua amante. Presto la donna si lascia divorare dalla gelosia. La guerra divide i due amanti: Livia è costretta dal marito a rifugiarsi nella loro villa in campagna. Una notte, Franz la raggiunge e le chiede del denaro per corrompere i medici ed evitare il campo di battaglia. Livia, accecata dalla passione, gli dà il denaro affidatole da Roberto per i patrioti. Il tradimento di Livia avrà tragiche conseguenze.
