Marius Holst
Bon 1965, Oslo. He became internationally known with his first feature film, CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO DIE (TI KNIVER I HJERTET, 1994), which won the Blaue Engel Award in Berlin 1995. In 1998 he was one of partners that started the production company 4 ½. His second feature, DRAGONFLIES (ØYENSTIKKER, 2001), was selected for competition in the Berlin’s Panorama 2002. His third feature, MIRUSH (BLODSBÅND, 2007), was screened at GFF 2008.

Ha conquistato fama internazionale con il suo primo lungometraggio, LA LUNGA ESTATE DI OTTO (TI KNIVER I HJERTET, 1994), che ha vinto il premio Angelo Azzurro al Festival di Berlino 1995. Nel 1998 ha contribuito alla fondazione della casa di produzione 4½. Il suo secondo film, DRAGONFLIES (ØYENSTIKKER, 2001), ha partecipato alla sezione Panorama del Festival di Berlino 2002. Il suo terzo film, MIRUSH (BLODSBÅND, 2007), è stato presentato in concorso al GFF 2008.

Director’s statement
“Fourteen years ago, I met a man who was once himself one of the boys on the island. This encounter drove me to pursue the story further, and it feels good that time has finally come to do that story justice. Based on a true story, in a not too distant past, KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND is a timeless tale of injustice, repression and revolt. Moreover, it’s a story about the evil that grows in institutions sealed off from the rest of the world, and how powerful regimes may spiral out of control. This is a dark, and not widely known, chapter in Norwegian history. Military force used against young civilians, has the potential of an epic and thrilling European drama, with both the tough, physical action of the story and its intimate portraits of the group of boys. The legend of the Bastøy Island, and what happened there, has haunted me through the years. From the first encounter I felt this was a story that begged to be made into film, thus exposing these unwanted boys destinies”.

“Quattordici anni fa ho incontrato un uomo che era stato uno dei ragazzi dell’isola. Questo incontro mi ha spinto a proseguire l’indagine su questa faccenda, alla quale il tempo ha finalmente reso giustizia. Basato su una storia vera, svoltasi in un passato non troppo lontano, KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND è un classico racconto di ingiustizia, repressione e rivolta. È inoltre una storia sul male che cresce nelle istituzioni isolate dal resto del mondo, e sul modo in cui i regimi possono degenerare. Si tratta di un capitolo oscuro e misconosciuto della storia norvegese. Una forza militare scagliata contro giovani civili: tutto questo ha la forza di un dramma di stampo europeo epico e avvincente, segnato da azione dura, fisica, e dai ritratti intimi di un gruppo di ragazzi. La leggenda dell’isola di Bastøy mi ha seguito negli anni. Fin dal primo incontro, ho sentito che questa era una storia che chiedeva di essere trasformata in film, per far conoscere i destini di questi giovani reietti”.
