Mike Mitchell
Mike Mitchell has worked with DreamWorks Animation since 1996, storyboarding and consulting on such films as ANTZ, SHREK 2, KUNG FU PANDA and MONSTERS VS. ALIENS. He has directed the animated short FRANNIE’S CHRISTMAS and live-action features such as SKY HIGH and DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO. His other animation work includes writing and storyboarding for THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. He has also storyboarded on Disney’s JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and on commercials and music videos for filmmakers such as Spike Jonze.

Ha diretto il cortometraggio d’animazione FRANNIE’S CHRISTMAS e lungometraggi dal vero come SKY HIGH: SCUOLA DI SUPERPOTERI e GIGOLÒ PER SBAGLIO. Nel campo dell’animazione, ha steso sceneggiature e storyboard per le serie THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW e SPONGEBOB. Ha creato storyboard anche per il film d’animazione della Disney JAMES E LA PESCA GIGANTE, e per spot pubblicitari e video musicali diretti da registi come Spike Jonze.

Director’s statement

“We’ve taken on the bittersweet challenge of wrapping up the story of Shrek. We know fans would want to see how it ends. We though it was interesting that he's not the ogre he was in the first Shrek films. He's domesticated, he's not scary, he's beloved by all the townspeople. The last thing we wanted was for Shrek to lose his edge”.
“It was a real challenge when we set out to define the look of the film. We really wanted to give this film a different look while at the same time, be true to the world of Shrek”.
“We were inspired by the look created for the holiday special SHREK THE HALLS. It was the first time I had seen Shrek and Fiona's house covered in snow. It was familiar, but still very unique. I knew then that we would be able to pull off the alternate reality from a design perspective. Taking well-known and beloved characters and throwing them into a new set of circumstances can be a challenging and daunting task for any filmmaker. We had to really imagine how each character's life would be, how they would act, had they never met Shrek”.

“Abbiamo raccolto la sfida – difficile ma allettante – di creare una nuova affascinante storia di Shrek. Sappiamo che i fan vorrebbero vedere come va a finire, e abbiamo pensato che fosse interessante il fatto che lui non è più l'orco che era nei primi film. È cambiato, non fa più paura, è amato da tutti i suoi concittadini, e l'ultima cosa che avremmo voluto per Shrek era che perdesse d’attrattiva”.
“È stata una vera impresa ridefinire l'aspetto del film. Volevamo ottenere uno stile diverso e al contempo restare fedeli al mondo di Shrek”.
“Ci siamo ispirati al taglio creato per lo speciale natalizio SHREKKATI PER LE FESTE, in cui per la prima volta si vede la casa di Shrek e Fiona ricoperta di neve. Era qualcosa di familiare e allo stesso tempo di diverso e unico. Sapevamo di poter creare una realtà alternativa nella prospettiva dello stile visivo. Prendere personaggi noti e amati e inserirli in circostanze del tutto diverse poteva sembrare un obiettivo laborioso e scoraggiante per qualunque regista. Abbiamo dovuto immaginare come sarebbe stata la vita dei personaggi e il loro modo di agire in un mondo capovolto nel quale non avessero mai incontrato Shrek”.
