Category: Edition 2014

Synopsis

Five friends in a high school hockey team in a small Canadian town, lose a big game. Feeling like losers, hemmed in by their circumstances at home and by being young in a small town, they decide to skate across the frozen lake Ontario from Canada to New York (22 miles across), on the coldest day of the year, to do something great nobody’s ever done before. The five boys are Casey, the team goalie; his best friend, the older Rudy; Rudy’s younger brother, Art; the swaggering and confident Boney; the practical and brainy Jimmy. Along their adventurous journey, they will have to overcome obstacles, test themselves and each other, become closer friends, help each other face up to their fears and not give up on their dreams.

Director’s statement

“SKATING TO NEW YORK is a coming-of-age adventure story. Five small-town Canadian teenage boys, friends from childhood who play together on the local hockey team, decide to break their losing streak by doing something that nobody's ever done before - they skate across a frozen lake from the Canadian to the New York side. Along the way they have adventures, overcome obstacles and learn to depend upon each other and bond as friends, returning home a stronger, better team”.
