The  touching standing ovation tributed to a moved MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI awarded of the François Truffaut prize is one of the unforgettable moments of the Festival.
The prize is also awarded to directors GIANNI AMELIO, WERNER HERZOG, ANDRZEJ WAJDA, PUPI AVATI and ROBERTO BENIGNI and actors JOHN TRAVOLTA, GIAN MARIA VOLONTÉ.
Amongst the guests ETTORE SCOLA, VITTORIO MEZZOGIORNO, MAURIZIO NICHETTI, JOHN SAVAGE and PINO CARUSO.

Danish director SØREN KRAGH-JACOBSEN, today known as one of the founders of DOGME 95 and author of "Mifune's Last Song" receives a special homage and honours. Many of his films are indeed about children and youth boys and girls told with great sensitivity and with his magic touch.
There is a novelty this year, e.g. The Honorary President of the Jury. Amazing russian director NIKITA MICHALKOV gives way to this "new" tradition.

On 27 July Mp Nilde Iotti, President of the House of Commons visits Giffoni. The festival has established itself and the airing of canadian film "Tommy Tricker" by Michael Rubbo, at night on Raidue is viewed by more than 3.000.000 people.

However the Festival must make do with the  State's little financing. The future does not look so bright at the moment, not in line with the Festival's needs, especially considering its amazing success. Claudio Gubitosi protests by resigning as Artistic Director.
