THE EXCURSIONIST by Audrius Juzenas (Lithuania) Reasons: For telling the story of the Second Post World War from an unusual point of view for the teenagers of our country, and for showing how the totalitarian sovietic régime made men lose all the values but wasn’t able to weaken freedom and hope, made stronger by catholic faith, which lives within the protagonist who is a symbol for the entire lithuanian population. The direction is able to mix the use of symbols with very realistic scenes through a smart use of photography, and music. Thanks to an intense interpretation of the young protagonist, the movie leads the audience to an open ending, as to leave a warning: no right, especially freedom, should be taken for granted. |

BROKEN HILL BLUES by Sofia Norlin (Sweden) Reasons: "Broken Hill Blues" is set in the northernmost town in Sweden: Kiruna, where the community lives around a mine. The film focuses on the story of the main characters who are about to take the leap in adulthood when most of the citizens are forced to move due to the explosions mining the ground. The CIAL award for the environment goes to this movie, mostly for the poetic and concrete approach that the director Sofia Norlin used to highlight the relationship between the native country and the youngest members of a small community. |

HAN GONG-JU by Sujin Lee (South Korea) Reasons: "Han Gong-Ju" is a brave film which tackles a very sensitive subject and in doing so creates a conversation and gives those affected by it a voice. It's jumbled narrative forces us to think, think and think again and it is this conscious manipulation and involvement of the audience that we believe makes "Han Gong-Ju" so great a film. |

LITTLE CRUSHES by Aleksandra Gowin, Ireneusz Grzyb (Poland) Reasons: Although there seemed like an unclear plot at first it was unconventional and entertaining. We liked the decision to use a smaller frame to show how close and intimate they could be without touching, and using the rule of three throughout the film. Little Crushes was cleverly written with interesting characters that weren’t typical but seemed ordinary. There was also no climax but this reflected how life can be at times. |

YOU WILL FIND ME by Eitan Pitigliani (Italy/Argentina) Reasons: For having told, through the magic and poetry of art, the journey of a young Argentinian in search for his origins marked by the Jewish persecution of the Second World War. The work is enriched by a very convincing acting performance of the young Argentinian actor Andres Gil. Special Mention: goes to Danish short film HELIUM by Andres Walter, for dealing with such a sensitive topic as a kid's terminal illness with directorial and narrative mastery. |
