Stephen Chbosky
Born 1970, Pittsburgh (USA). In 1992 he graduated from the University of Southern California’s screenwriting program. In 1995 he directed his first feature film, THE FOUR CORNERS OF NOWHERE, which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2005 he wrote the screenplay for RENT, a musical directed by Chris Columbus. He has been an author for the TV series JERICHO. In 1999 he released his first novel, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, which inspired the homonymous feature.

Director’s statement
“I wrote the book for very personal reasons. I was going through a difficult time in my personal life. But I had also reached a point in my life where I was ready to write about why good people have to go through such bad things and how a family of friends can get you through. I really needed answers for my self and it was like Charlie tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘I’m ready to tell my story’. I was not trying to please everybody or reach everybody. I was just trying to tell my own truth. I never thought about appealing to a wide audience. I authentically told my story, and I think that people respect that.”
“Watching the movie, an adult may get very nostalgic about what it was it like to be that young. A twelve-year-old, who hasn’t been through high school yet, may find a bit of a road map. Someone in the thick of it might just need some affirmation that what they’re going through is real and that someone else gets it. I want a mom to see the movie and remember being young, and I want a daughter to feel affirmed about what it is to be young. I want them both to be compelled to talk to each other about what they’ve experienced. That’s all I want”.

“Ho scritto il libro per motivi molto personali. Stavo attraversando un momento difficile della mia vita privata. Ma ero anche arrivato a un punto della mia vita in cui ero pronto a scrivere sul perché brave persone a volte vivano cose tremende e su come una famiglia di amici possa aiutarti a superare tutto. Avevo davvero bisogno di risposte, ed è stato come se Charlie mi toccasse sulla spalla e mi dicesse: ‘Sono pronto a raccontare la mia storia’. Non stavo cercando di ottenere consenso da tutti o di arrivare a tutti. Stavo solo cercando di raccontare la mia verità. Non ho mai pensato di piacere a un grande pubblico. Ho raccontato autenticamente la mia storia, e credo che la gente lo rispetti”.
“Guardando il film, un adulto potrebbe avere nostalgia di cosa significava per lui avere quell’età. Un dodicenne, non avendo ancora frequentato le scuole superiori, potrebbe invece trovarvi una sorta di mappa d’orientamento. Qualcuno nel pieno di quegli anni potrebbe solo aver bisogno di capire che quello che sta vivendo è reale e che qualcun altro lo capisce. Vorrei che una madre, vedendo il film, si ricordasse di quando è stata giovane, e che una figlia sentisse la conferma di cosa significa essere giovani. Vorrei che entrambe sentissero la necessità di parlarsi delle esperienze che hanno vissuto. Questo è tutto ciò che vorrei”.
