The suburb has been represented as a place which is not necessarily ugly and where people are not inevitably ill-fated. The decay can be also psychological and it is possible to choose to do good. The theme of racism is also dealt with in the film. |

THE GOLDEN CAGE by Diego Quemada-Diez (Mexico/Spain) Reasons: The film "The Golden Cage" deals with the immigration issue in Latin America towards the United States. Three teenagers are the protagonists of the film. They live in the slums of Guatemala and their dream is to reach ”the promised land” for a better life. Their journey will be full of obstacles but also full of spectacular and natural landscapes represented in a masterly way by the director – who thanks to breath-taking aerial takes – bring the audience to those wild and picturesque landscapes. The relationship between the characters and nature is emphasized by the SNOW which represents the true magic. When they arrive in the United States and finally see the snow, a new life begins. |
