Travis Fine
Born 1968, Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 7, he made his debut as an actor. Then he took part in theatre, movie and TV productions. He starred in several feature films (such as THE THIN RED LINE, by Terrence Malick, and GIRL, INTERRUPTED, by James Mangold), and TV series (including THE YOUNG RAIDERS, JAG, THE LAZARUS MAN, PROFILER, THE PRETENDER, FAMILY LAW, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION). After directing a number of short films, in 1997 he made his first feature film, THE OTHERS, followed by THE RIDE (1999) and THE SPACE BETWEEN (2010). ANY DAY NOW won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival 2012.

Dopo aver diretto alcuni cortometraggi, nel 1997 gira il suo primo lungometraggio, UNA BANDA DI SCOPPIATI, cui seguono THE RIDE (1999) e THE SPACE BETWEEN (2010). ANY DAY NOW ha vinto il Premio del Pubblico al Tribeca Film Festival 2012.
Director’s statement
“I’m a huge fan of the gritty, character-driven dramas of the 1970s. And I love stories about unlikely heroes finding love in unlikely places. But, when I first read a script that was written over 30 years ago inspired by a real life flamboyant gay man and the mentally handicapped kid he looked after, I honestly did not know why I was so passionate about bringing the story to the screen. I’m a straight guy with a wife, three healthy kids and a house in the suburbs. And while I have always had a soft spot in my heart for those less fortunate and supported equal rights for all, I have never been overtly political or sought to champion a specific political cause with my filmmaking. And then one day it happened... that ‘aha’ moment when I discovered my very deep rooted and personal connection to the story. I was literally on the floor, sobbing over the parental alienation practiced by my ex-wife that has permanently damaged what was once a close and loving relationship with my oldest daughter. Through the tears that streamed down my face, I asked: ‘What right does she have to take my child away from me?’. In that moment, I understood that Rudy’s pain was not unique. It was not a gay pain or a straight pain. It was not a white pain or a black pain. It was not a rich pain or a poor pain. It was the universal pain felt by anyone who has ever had a child they love taken from them against their will. And, in my moment of seemingly unbearable pain that day, I understood why I had to make ANY DAY NOW”.

“Sono un grande fan dei film drammatici degli anni ’70, grintosi e dominati dai personaggi. E amo le storie d’amore su eroi improbabili che trovano l’amore in posti improbabili. Ma, quando ho letto per la prima volta una sceneggiatura scritta più di 30 anni fa e ispirata alla storia vera di uno sfavillante gay che si prese cura di un ragazzo mentalmente disabile, sinceramente non sapevo perché fossi così ansioso di portare questa storia sullo schermo. Sono etero, ho una moglie, tre figli in salute e una casa in periferia. E, mentre ho sempre avuto un debole nel mio cuore per i meno fortunati e ho sempre chiesto e sostenuto uguali diritti per tutti, non sono mai stato politicamente schierato e non ho mai cercato di appoggiare una specifica causa politica con i miei film. E poi un giorno è successo, è arrivato il momento in cui ho scoperto il mio legame profondo e personale con questa storia. Ero letteralmente a terra, a piangere per l’alienazione genitoriale praticata dalla mia ex moglie, che ha definitivamente distrutto lo stretto e dolce rapporto che avevo con la mia primogenita. Mentre le lacrime scorrevano sul mio viso, mi sono domandato: ‘Che diritto ha questa donna di separarmi da mia figlia?’. In quel momento, ho capito che il dolore di Rudy non era esclusivo. Non era un dolore gay o un dolore etero. Non era un dolore bianco o un dolore nero. Non era un dolore da ricchi o un dolore da poveri. Era il dolore universale sofferto da tutti coloro che si sono visti portare via un figlio contro la loro volontà. E quel giorno, nel momento in cui sentivo un dolore apparentemente insanabile, ho capito perché dovevo realizzare ANY DAY NOW”.
