Karzan Kader
Born 1982, Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan. 6 years old, during the war in Iraq, he and his family left Kurdistan and eventually ended up in Sweden. He graduated from Dramatiska institutet as a film director in 2010 and the same year he won a Student Academy Award for his graduation short film, BEKAS, which was awarded as best short Generator +13 at GFF 2011. His first feature film of the same title is based upon this short.

Nato nel 1982 a Sulaymaniyah, in Kurdistan. A sei anni, nel corso della guerra in Iraq, insieme alla sua famiglia lascia il Kurdistan ed emigra in Svezia. Studia regia al Dramatiska Institutet, la scuola nazionale di cinema svedese, dove si diploma nel 2010, e nello stesso anno vince uno Student Academy Award, il premio oscar per gli studenti di cinema, con il suo saggio di diploma, BEKAS, miglior cortometraggio Generator +13 al GFF 2011. Su questo corto si basa il suo primo lungometraggio, dal medesimo titolo.

Director’s statement
“1991, I was six years old. I see myself and my brother getting ready for passing border in Iraq. Tired, hungry and scared.  This is my story, how I left Kurdistan, Iraq. When I started writing BEKAS, I wanted to tell this story because I fell in love with the dream of putting my own feet on the streets of America and live in peace far from the war of Saddam. And I love the idea of two kids putting themselves on a dangerous road to get to their hero Superman, from the streets of Iraq to America, on a donkey. I can’t see this kind of story be told from any other part of the world. This part of the world has been in war for so long that it has become the normal state there. I want this story to be a strong voice of the Kurdish people to the rest of the world. There are no other films showing this side of Kurdistan to the rest of the world, it has never been done before”.

“1991, avevo sei anni. Vedo me stesso e mio fratello prepararci per passare la frontiera irachena. Stanchi, affamati e spaventati. Questa è la mia storia, la storia di come ho lasciato il Kurdistan. Quando ho iniziato a scrivere BEKAS, volevo raccontare questa storia, perché mi ero innamorato del sogno di metter piede sulle strade americane e di vivere in pace, lontano dalla guerra di Saddam. E amo l’idea di due ragazzi che si mettono in pericolo per raggiungere il loro eroe, Superman, dalle strade irachene agli Stati Uniti, sul dorso di un asino. In nessun’altro posto al mondo si potrebbe raccontare una storia di questo tipo. In questa parte del mondo la guerra è durata così a lungo da diventare una condizione normale. Voglio che questa storia faccia sentire la voce del popolo curdo al resto del mondo. Non esistono altri film che mostrino al mondo questo lato del Kurdistan, non è mai stata fatta prima una cosa del genere”.
