Synopsis

Paris, summer 1942, France is under German occupation. Jews are first forced to wear the yellow star, then they are banned from any public place, they can’t work or attending schools. Many Jewish families, including that of Joseph, 10 years, live in Montmartre. The situation is worsening day by day and the city is divided: some are seeking to protect and help their neighbours, others deride them. In the night between 15 and 16 July, the fate of the Jews of Paris changed forever. Following an agreement between Hitler and General Petain, thousands of Jews, including Joseph and his family, are taken to the Velodrome d 'Hiver, where they stay for days without water, no toilets and little food. To help them a few brave French as the nurse Anette Monod, and the firefighters who not only gave them water, contrary to orders, but accept to take secret messages to friends and families. Deported to the concentration camp Beaune-la-Rolande, still in French territory, the Jews keep hope and families are still together. But one morning, Joseph and other children are separated from their parents.

Parigi, estate 1942, la Francia è sotto l'occupazione tedesca. Gli ebrei vengono prima costretti a portare la stella gialla, poi vengono allontanati da ogni luogo pubblico, dal loro impiego, dalle scuole. Nel quartiere di Montmartre vivono molte famiglie ebree tra cui quella di Joseph, 10 anni. La situazione peggiora di giorno in giorno e la città si divide: alcuni cercano di proteggere e aiutare i loro vicini semiti, altri li insultano e li deridono. Nella notte tra il 15 e il 16 Luglio, il destino degli ebrei di Parigi cambia per sempre: in seguito ad un accordo tra Hitler e il generale Pétain, migliaia di ebrei, tra cui anche Joseph e la sua famiglia, vengono condotti al Vélodrome d'Hiver, dove restano per giorni senza acqua, senza servizi igienici e con pochissimo cibo. Ad aiutarli pochi parigini coraggiosi come l’infermiera Anette Monod, e i pompieri che non solo li dissetano con gli idranti, contravvenendo agli ordini, ma accettano di consegnare in segreto messaggi per parenti e amici. Deportati al campo di concentramento Beaune-la-Rolande, ancora in territorio francese, gli ebrei conservano la speranza e soprattutto le famiglie sono ancora insieme. Ma un mattino Joseph e gli altri bambini vengono separati dai genitori.
