WALKING OUT by Alex & Andrew Smith (USA) Reasons: because the film deals with, avoiding conventional simplifications, the difficult issues of the father child relationship which has been put to test by the distance, which is not only geographic, between the two of them. The main character is moving towards adulthood and this change is described through a hunting session which has strong metaphorical tones, highlighted by the evocative use of sound and meaningful silences that end up serving as an amplification of the mountain voice which is a real character. Very long shots are alternated with long shots and close ups which tell us the two main characters are getting closer little by little. This getting closer is also marked by recurrent symbolic elements. |

| AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AWARD | THEY CALL US MONSTERS by Ben Lear (USA) Reasons: for showing clearly and strongly the nuances of troubled teenagers with troubled stories albeit in their humanity. For tackling the theme of reintegration in society, affected by the law 260 which enables the state to prosecute them as adults thus violating their rights, depriving them of the possibility to be what they are already and what they desire to become. For bringing the spotlight on the discussion this law entails, narrating the sweetness and light heartedness of these young people and, in contrast the tragedies of the terrible crimes they have committed. A state that leaves these young people to themselves is at risk of losing their sensitivity which has been enhanced by a troubled life, and the potential contribution they may be able to give society once they have paid their dues. |
