Aristomenis Tsirbas
Born in 1967 in Montréal, he studied at Concordia University. He began his career as a graphic designer and film editor. Thereafter he moved to Los Angeles to work as a visual effects artist for films such as Cameron’s TITANIC (1997) and advertising spots for Nike, 7up, Coca Cola. Then he graduated to visual and digital effects supervisor for such projects as A WRINKLE IN TIME and STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. In 2000 he began writing and directing a string of animated short films including RAY TRACEY IN FULL TILT (2000), MECH WARRIOR: VENGEANCE (2000) and THE FREAK (2002), that won a dozen international awards. TERRA, based on his 2003 short of the same name, is his feature directorial debut.

Diventa supervisore degli effetti visivi digitali per progetti come VIAGGIO NEL MONDO CHE NON C’È (A WRINKLE IN TIME) e STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. Dal 2000 scrive e dirige corti d’animazione, tra cui RAY TRACEY IN FULL TILT (2000), MECH WARRIOR: VENGEANCE (2000) e THE FREAK (2002), che vince diversi premi internazionali. TERRA, basato su un suo corto del 2003 dallo stesso titolo, è il suo primo lungometraggio da regista.

Director’s statement
“Looking back, searching for that single moment of inspiration, I realize it was inevitable that my first film would be a reverse alien invasion. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved alien invasion films. It was only after watching some of them like the original WAR OF THE WORLDS for the twentieth time that I realized I wanted more from them. The aliens’ motives always seemed to be either unclear or evil. None of the films seemed to fully explore all the nuances of the battle of survival between species. This sense of “wanting” haunted me throughout my adolescence and then well into my adulthood. When I finally had a chance to make this film, I realized I had an opportunity to not only tell a reverse alien invasion story, but to try to show both sides of the invasion. [...] Science-Fiction has always had the luxury of being a medium where we can express topical issues freely. TERRA, always intended as allegory, has allowed me to explore this duality of invader and invaded. But more importantly, I hope that it has allowed the audience to explore their own inner duality. What we fear most in others, is what we fear within ourselves”.

“Guardandomi indietro, andando a ricercare il momento chiave dell’ispirazione, mi rendo conto che era inevitabile che il mio primo film raccontasse un’invasione aliena alla rovescia. Dacché mi ricordi, ho sempre amato i film di invasioni aliene. Solo vedendo per la ventesima volta alcuni di questi film, come il primo LA GUERRA DEI MONDI, ho sentito che volevo qualcosa di più. Le motivazioni degli alieni sembravano sempre oscure o diaboliche. Nessuno di questi film pareva esplorare tutte le sfumature della battaglia per la sopravvivenza tra le specie. Questa ‘mancanza’ mi ha seguito per tutta l’adolescenza, fino all’età adulta. Quando ho avuto finalmente la possibilità di realizzare questo film, ho capito che avevo l’opportunità non solo di raccontare una storia di invasione aliena alla rovescia, ma anche di provare a mostrare tutti e due i lati dell’invasione. […] La fantascienza ha sempre avuto la grandezza di essere un mezzo con cui poter esprimere liberamente problemi attuali. BATTAGLIA PER LA TERRA, letto in chiave allegorica, mi ha permesso di esplorare la dualità tra invasore e invaso. Ma, cosa ancora più importante, spero che il film permetta agli spettatori di esplorare la dualità che è dentro di noi. Ciò che temiamo negli altri, in realtà è ciò che temiamo in noi stessi”.
