Synopsis

The documentary tells the story of John Baptist Onama, 41 years old, who was a child soldier in the Eighties in Idi Amin ruled Uganda. His story is enlaced with those of other children soldiers living the same drama nowadays in different African countries. The documentary was shot in Sierra Leone, Uganda and in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and shows inedited images of Freetown battle in 1999, in Sierra Leone. The story pieces together the dramatic situation of young fighters and the ins and outs of the phenomenon: from the exploitation of natural resources (oil, diamonds, golden, coltan) by local oligarchies and foreign potencies to inner wars to control these traffics and the weapons trade.

Il documentario racconta la storia di John Baptist Onama, 41 anni, che negli anni Ottanta è stato un bambino-soldato nell’Uganda di Idi Amin. La sua storia si intreccia a quella di altri bambini e bambine che, attualmente, vivono lo stesso dramma in diversi Paesi africani. Il documentario è stato realizzato in Sierra Leone, Uganda e Repubblica Democratica del Congo, e mostra immagini inedite della battaglia che nel 1999 ha insanguinato Freetown in Sierra Leone. Il racconto, oltre a ricostruire i drammi vissuti dai piccoli guerrieri, svela anche i retroscena del triste fenomeno di dimensioni planetarie: dallo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali (petrolio, diamanti, oro, coltan) da parte di oligarchie locali e potenze straniere, alle guerre interne per il controllo di questi traffici, fino al business legato alla vendita delle armi.
