Synopsis
In a foggy landscape, a mother and her son live in a mansion forgotten by time. Ruben, the son, is blind, but still remembers when he could see. He is a lonely and fierce young man who rages at the world. Hoping to calm his tormented soul, his mother hires Marie, a mysterious woman, to read for him. Marie gradually tames Ruben with the gentle power of her voice. Ruben falls in love with Marie, imagining her to be as young and beautiful as the voice he hears. But Marie is neither young nor beautiful: she is a good decade older than Ruben and bears the scars of a horrible tragedy on her body. Having withdrawn into herself, she has chosen books over life, the beauty of the written page over the beauty she will never find in the mirror. But, when the doctor says that Ruben can be operated and will be able to see again, fear takes over. Will Ruben reject Marie, or is true love really blind?
Sinossi
Una madre e suo figlio vivono in un maniero sperduto in un paesaggio nebbioso. Ruben, il figlio, è cieco, ma ricorda ancora il tempo in cui poteva vedere. È un ragazzo solitario, fiero, arrabbiato col mondo. Sperando di poter calmare quest’anima tormentata, la madre di Ruben assume una donna misteriosa, Marie, affinché legga per lui. A poco a poco Marie placa Ruben con la bellezza della propria voce. Ruben si innamora di Marie, immaginandola bella e giovane come la sua voce. Ma Marie non è giovane né bella: è molto più grande di Ruben e reca su di sé le cicatrici di un’orribile tragedia. Marie si è chiusa in se stessa, ha preferito i libri alla vita, la bellezza della pagina scritta a una bellezza esteriore che non troverà mai. Quando il dottore comunica che Ruben potrà essere operato e riacquistare la vista, la paura prende il sopravvento. Ruben rifiuterà Marie, o l’amore è davvero cieco?
