Synopsis

Tara is a 12-year-old girl whose mother, Jolene, can’t seem to get her life together, nor build a stable environment for her daughter. When her boyfriend is arrested for growing marijuana, Jolene takes off, and Tara is put in foster care. Jolene’s brother, James, isn’t much better off than Jolene, but he feels a responsibility toward Tara, and when he decides to break her out of her foster home, they set off on a journey with no set destination except to find a better life. The road leads them to James and Jolene’s father’s farm and the violent childhood that James has never confronted. Tara learns of Jolene’s past and the reasons why she has lived such a scattered, scarred life, and James is forced finally to stand up to a cold, scary father while there is still a chance to save Tara from a gloomy future.

Sinossi

Tara è una ragazzina di 12 anni. La madre, Jolene, non sembra capace di badare a se stessa, né tanto meno riesce a creare un ambiente stabile in cui la figlia possa crescere. Quando il fidanzato della donna viene arrestato per aver coltivato marijuana, Jolene fugge e Tara viene affidata ad un istituto. Il fratello di Jolene, James, non è molto più affidabile di lei ma si sente responsabile per Tara. Decide così di tirarla fuori dall’orfanotrofio e condurla con sé in un viaggio senza destinazione alla ricerca di una vita migliore. I due approdano alla fattoria del padre di James e Jolene. Lì Tara scoprirà il passato di sua madre e le ragioni per cui la sua vita è un tale disastro, mentre James sarà costretto a fare i conti con la sua infanzia di violenza. Per poter offrire a Tara la possibilità di sfuggire ad un oscuro futuro, dovrà affrontare suo padre.
