Synopsis
Awet has the heart of a fighter: filled with strength, love and longing. Despite the chaos and turbulence of the war of independence against Ethiopia, bright little Awet grows up peacefully in an orphanage in Asmara, lovingly cared for by Italian nuns. Then, one day, Awet learns that her father, a freedom fighter, is still alive and demands her return. Amidst her new family, Awet does not find warmth and security but poverty and hard work. The father ultimately gives her and her sister away to one of the rival liberation armies as “daughters of Eritrea”. There Awet makes friends and sees how one can be inspired by the ideals of freedom, but she also experiences the numbing madness of war as she comes face to face with death and fanaticism. But her “heart of fire”, her courage and her conscience finally show her a way out.
Sinossi
Awet ha il cuore di una combattente: pieno di forza, amore, voglia di vivere. Malgrado il caos della guerra d’indipendenza dell’Eritrea contro l’Etiopia, la piccola, splendida Awet cresce serena in un orfanotrofio di Asmara, accudita con amore da suore italiane. Un giorno apprende che suo padre, combattente per la libertà, è ancora vivo e la rivuole con sé. Nella nuova famiglia Awet non trova calore e sicurezza, ma povertà e fatica. Alla fine Awet e sua sorella vengono consegnate dal padre a una delle fazioni rivali delle forze di liberazione come “figlie dell’Eritrea”. In quell’ambiente Awet stringe delle amicizie e capisce come si possa essere ispirati dagli ideali di libertà, ma scopre anche la raggelante follia della guerra quando si trova davanti la morte e il fanatismo. Ciononostante, il suo “cuore di fuoco”, il suo coraggio e la sua coscienza le indicheranno la via della salvezza.
