Synopsis

Brazil, 1970. 12 year old Mauro is longing for the final of the Soccer World Cup between Brazil and Italy. Suddenly his parents have to leave the country for their political involvement and take the boy to São Paulo in the Bom Retiro neighbourhood to his grandfather’s house. Once in the city the boy finds out that the old man has died. Shlomo, the responsible of the local synagogue, will take care of him. Mauro will discover a multicultural universe composed of Hebrews, Italians, Greeks and Arabs. With them he will share his passion for soccer and the bittersweet flavour of his coming of age.

Cao Hamburger
Carlos Imperio Hamburger, whose stage name is Cao, was born in 1962 in São Paulo, Brazil. He began his cinematographic career making animation films, specialising in clay animation. He made short movies, commercials and a series for TV Cultura using that technique. In 1991 he moved over to live-action, making more commercials but also working on an educational campaign. Two years later, Cao Hamburger wrote and directed the successful TV series, RA-TIM-BUM CASTLE, which became his first feature-film for cinema in the year 2000 (presented at the GFF 2001).
