THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED

Category: Edition 2006

Synopsis

USA 1913. Open golf championship. Two equally sympathetic young men compete: the British star Harry Vardon and the young American prodigy Francis Ouimet. Though they hail from opposite sides of the Atlantic, the struggles that the two young golfers have had to overcome are markedly similar; both grew up in hard-scrabble, working-class homes that happened to be adjacent to golf courses, and both were preternaturally disposed to the game. In addition, both must defy the disdain of the golfing gentry. Vardon is already a reigning champion and international darling when Ouimet makes it to his first tournament to battle him.

Born in 1955. He is actor and director. He entered the movie biz working as property-man with Roger Corman when he was 18. After an appearance in CRAZY MAMA (1975) by Jonathan Demme, he moves to New York where he studies acting at University. In 1981 he has a role in STRIPES (1981) by Ivan Reitman and, in the following years, appears in many low budgets films and TV movies. In the meantime he writes and directs short films among which FISH HEADS (1982). In 1984 he is in the cast of TERMINATOR by James Cameron. The same director gives him the role of soldier Hudson in ALIENS (1986). Success arrives in 1991 with the thriller ONE FALSE MOVE by Carl Franklin. Among his following films we remember TOMBSTONE (1993) by George P. Cosmatos and APOLLO 13 (1995) by Ron Howard. In 2001 he directs his first feature, the thriller FRAILTY.

Director’s statement

“The film is a classic tale of an American underdog. Here was an immigrant kid growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, at the turn of the century – a time when if you were born working class you stayed working class. There was no crossing over into another social class because it just wasn’t done. But Francis Ouimet decided to do things his own way and he changed things for everybody. He showed that it wasn’t about how much money you had or who your father was. It’s who you are inside that really counts”.
