POLLEKE

Category: Edition 2004

Synopsis

Polleke, an 11 year old girl, is in love with Mimoen, a Moroccan boy who lives in the flat opposite hers. His parents force him to stop seeing her because they don’t share the same cultural background. While Polleke tries to cope with her sadness at the farm of her grandparents, her mother falls in love with her schoolteacher. In the meantime Polleke’s father, Spiek, once a free spirit and optimist, gradually becomes a homeless junkie (more and more dependent on his daughter). Polleke and Mimoen still long for one another and start seeing each other in secret. Mimoen gives Polleke the idea to help Spiek carry out a detoxication program. When this eventually works out, and the teacher marries Polleke’s mother, Polleke and Mimoen also decide to stay together… for ever?!

Director’s statement

“It is the catchy crossover genre that combines East and West. In the end, also Polleke finds a way to do just that by learning, fighting and growing up: in this respect the film is also a coming of age story. Polleke starts in an innocent world, but needs to overcome the harshness of reality. And so she does: the tone of the film remains optimistic and light, with a lot of humour”.
