Michel Gondry (Versailles, May 8, 1963) is a film director, screenwriter, film producer and French actor, videoclips and television commercials, known for his innovative visual style.
Gondry was born in Versailles, France, and soon became passionate about pop music. He moved to Paris and began his career as a musician in the French group Oui Oui, as a drummer. The group makes two albums and several singles, and Gondry makes the related promotional videoclips, until 1992, the year of the band's dissolution. One of the videos directed by the director passes on MTV and is noticed by Björk, who asks him to direct the video of Human Behavior.
The collaboration with the Icelandic singer continues for a long time, giving life to six videos, while Gondry starts working with the likes of Rolling Stones, The White Stripes, Chemical Brothers, Foo Fighters, Massive Attack, Kylie Minogue, Daft Punk, Lenny Kravitz and Radiohead also directed acclaimed and famous commercials, such as those for Levi's (the 1994 Drugstore commercial won a Golden Lion at the Cannes International Advertising Festival), the Smirnoff vodka and the Gap.
Gondry is often cited with directors Spike Jonze and David Fincher as representatives of the great influence of the style of video clips in the world of cinema. His first work in this field is the short film La lettre (1998).
