Synopsis
Jill, a prostitute from New Orleans, has recently married a farmer. When she arrives at the farm she finds that the man has been killed by the bandit Frank. The killer’s instigator, Morton, is a rich man who wants to buy all the lands where a railroad to the West will pass through. The widow could be the next victim if she doesn’t sell the farm. “Armonica”, a mysterious man, arrives to protect her. We will discover that Armonica has just one task: to take personally revenge for his brother’s homicide, committed by Frank years before.
The film is the fourth western made by Leone. It was shot with very good means and an exceptional cast. It has been interpreted as an epic poem about the end of an age and, at the same time, the end of a cinema genre. The railroad, or the new civilisation, sweeps away the West, its epic deeds, its landscapes and its rude and lonely characters. Modified by the studios responsible, the film was considered a flop. Nowadays it is considered one of the Leone’s masterpieces - together with IL BUONO, IL BRUTTO, IL CATTIVO and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA – and one of the staples of the western genre. According to Quentin Tarantino the film is “a very good interactive manual of directing”.
Sinossi
Jill, una prostituta di New Orleans, raggiunta la fattoria dell’uomo che ha sposato da poco, scopre che è stato assassinato dal bandito Frank su mandato di Morton, un milionario deciso ad accaparrarsi, con ogni mezzo, i terreni sui quali far passare la ferrovia nel West. La vedova rischia di essere la prossima vittima se non cederà la proprietà. A proteggerla interviene “Armonica”, un misterioso personaggio, che persegue con tenacia un unico obiettivo: vendicare l’uccisione del fratello, compiuta anni prima da Frank.
Quarto western di Leone, viene girato con grandi mezzi e un cast d’eccezione, e viene interpretato come un poema epico sulla fine di un'epoca e, allo stesso tempo, di un genere cinematografico. La ferrovia, ovvero la nuova civiltà, spazza via il West e la sua epopea, i suoi scenari selvaggi e i suoi personaggi rudi e solitari. Ritoccato e modificato dai responsabili dello studio, il film fu inizialmente ritenuto quasi un flop. Oggi è invece considerato dai più come il capolavoro del regista, insieme a IL BUONO, IL BRUTTO, IL CATTIVO e a C'ERA UNA VOLTA IN AMERICA, uno dei capisaldi del genere western e, secondo Quentin Tarantino, “un ottimo manuale interattivo di regia”.
