Tomoharu Katsumata (Shizuoka Prefecture, 1938) is a Japanese director, known primarily for his work in anime. One of the main directors of Toei Animation during the sixties, seventies and eighties, Katsumata has directed many TV series of Toei, adaptations of Gō Nagai manga, including Devilman (1972), Mazinga Z (1972), Cutey Honey (1973), Great Mazinga (1974), UFO Robot Goldrake (1975) and Gaiking (1976).
A graduate of the Nippon University film school in 1960, he began working in the same year for the Kyoto division of Toei Company, as assistant director of Masahiro Makino and Eiichi Kudo in his drama about the samurai. After a few years, Katsumata was hired by Tokyo's Toei Animation (Toei Animation), debuting as a director for some of the first Toei series such as Ken the Wolf Boy (1963) and the first Cyborg 009 (1968).
Among the other series directed by Katsumata for Toei we can mention Danguard (1977) as well as the films Mazinga Z against Devilman (1973) and La Sirenetta, the most beautiful story of Andersen (1975).
