This is the first annual taking place at the new Cinema Citadel. The GFF offices are moved to the new structure in february 2002.
Jurors come from Albania, Belarus, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Lybia, Norway, Palestine, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Tunisia, USA.
"Grazia's Island" by Emanuele Crialese, already praised at Cannes is in competition, and the short film "The Red Jacket", Academy Award nominated as best short film at the 2003 Oscars. Other unforgettable films in this annual: "Baran" by Majid Majidi, the winner "Scars" and the intense "Abandoned".
"Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" (UIP), "Little Tom Thumb" (Lucky Red), "Return to Never Land", "Shaolin Soccer" and "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra" (Buena Vista) are all premiered.
In the non-competitive Reload sections - films for youth and adults, - and Animated Nights - absolutely amazing animated short films.
For pre-school children the stage section Kids in Wonderland, with 7 shows including two international ones for the younger children.
MERYL STREEP was the wonderful sponsor to this edition. Meeting her is for the jurors a wonderful, emotional expeirence. also MOHSEN MAKHMALBAF is in Giffoni (he takes part in the Y Gen debates), BRAD RENFRO and ANTON YELCHIN, who wins the Explosive Talent Award.

The Festival takes part actively in two important social campaigns On the Road Movie (on road safety sponsored by Infrastructure Ministery) and O ci sei o ti fai (against drug addiction, in collaboration with Education Minister and chariy organizations).
