FILMS IN COMPETITION ON 28 JULY 2024

 

Last day of the 54th edition of the Giffoni Film Festival focusing on the theme ‘The Illusion of Distance’. The over 5000 Giffoners belonging to the various juries, coming from 33 countries around the world, after taking part in the Talent meetings, in the evening will witness the announcement of the films and short films in competition, voted by them during the 10 days of the Festival.

For the jurors of Elements +10 at 10 a.m. in the Sala Sordi, the short films in competition will be screened again.

AERIALIST (Russia, 2024) directed by Anna Kuzina. A woman works as a saleswoman in a textile shop. Although she enjoys working with textiles, her daily routine is rather monotonous. However, when she meets a group of gymnasts, her life is brightened by a dream.

CAFUNÈ (Spain, 2024) directed by directors Carlos F. De Vigo and Lorena Ares. Alma, a lonely refugee girl, is thrown back into her traumatic past when her doll falls into the pool. The event takes her back to the shipwreck of the refugee boat of which she is the only survivor.

TO THE BIKINI! (Canada, 2023) directed by Justine Gauthier. Ten-year-old Lili rebels when her parents force her to wear a bikini, even though she has always swum topless.

GAME RULES (Sweden, 2024) directed by Christian Zetterberg. A youth handball team is about to participate in its first major tournament. While they are aiming for the top, facing professional players, scouts and sponsors, the game is suddenly interrupted by some adults.

GRAVITY (Italy, 2024) directed by Robotina, in a dystopian world, very similar to ours, gravity works in reverse. In such a world, where all you have to do is let go of an object to see it disappear into the sky, waste seems to be the least of the problems. At least until Gravity decides to change direction again.

LIFE (Sweden, 2024) directed by Hillevi Gustafson, a teenage girl spends the night before the most important day of her life (the day she starts high school) getting ready. Will she manage to turn into the person she thinks she wants to be?

MARIE (Czech Republic, 2024) directed by Jan B. Piskač, during a dull lesson, Frantisek plunges deep into his imagination and gets lost in the drawings on the pages of his notebook. However, the deeper he gets into his world, the more his dreams turn to his classmate Marie, with whom he is hopelessly in love.

THE RAFFLE (Turkey, 2024) directed by Muhammet Emin Altunkaynak, an intelligent and ambitious boy, who cannot stand injustice, has to face the neighbourhood grocer who organises an obviously rigged prize draw.

YUCK! (France, 2023) directed by Loïc Espuche. ‘YUCK! When couples kiss on the mouth, it’s disgusting! And the worst thing is that you can’t ignore them: when people are about to kiss, their lips turn all pink and shiny. Little Léo laughs at them, like all the kids at summer camp. But he has a secret he won’t tell his friends: his mouth has started to glisten.

Similarly, Elements +6 jurors in the Sala Lumiére will have the opportunity to watch the short films in competition from 10 a.m. onwards.

The first short film in the programme is BOTTLES (Morocco, 2024) directed by Yassine EL Idrissi. Said, a 13-year-old boy lives in the old Medina of Rabat. In summer he works a side job: he collects empty beer bottles and sells them to a shop. With the money he wants to buy food for a dog he is hiding, despite his best friend telling him that doing so is ‘haram’, i.e. forbidden according to their religion.

THE GIRL WITH THE OCCUPIED EYES (Portugal, 2024) directed by André Carrilho. A little girl wanders through towns, countryside and beaches, always with her eyes fixed to a phone. Along the way, she meets a variety of characters including a bear, dolphins, pirates and an alien. They all try to catch her attention, but she is indifferent to everything.

GO MY WAY (Spain, 2024) by director Chelo Loureiro. Elisa likes Martin, but Martin does not seem to notice. The advice she receives to make Martin fall in love involves changing not only her appearance but also her entire personality. Will Elisa give up being herself to win Martin over?

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS (France, 2023) directed by Rémi Durin. Alfonso, a young squirrel scout, always has his head in the clouds. He loves to watch them and sometimes photographs them. His parents and friends find it difficult to take his hobby seriously. But watching the clouds is not always easy: Alfonso sometimes has to be as brave as some of the great explorers of our time…

HOMEWORK (Spain, 2024) directed by Nacho Arjona. A pencil and its friends use their unique skills to help each other in unexpected situations at the school where they all live together.

LEAP OF THE FAITH (France, 2024) directed by the filmmaking team of Martina Doll, Coline Reverbel, Kenzo Talma, Edgar Vernier, Lisa Vlaine and Anaïs Dos. A little girl is on holiday at the seaside with her little brother when she suddenly falls in love at first sight with a mysterious boy she sees in the distance.

MAGIC CANDIES (Japan, 2024) directed by Daisuke Nishio. The other children in the park never ask Dong-Dong to play. That’s OK. He likes to play with marbles by himself. One day, he buys a bag of coloured candies instead of new marbles. The first time he puts one in his mouth, his old sofa starts talking to him. Apparently, the people, animals and objects in Dong-Dong’s life have a lot to say. With each piece of candy, he discovers new voices and perspectives, including his own.

MONSTER SISTER (South Korea, 2024) directed by Choi Eunji. Monster lives in isolation and a group of bullies torment her at school. Will she be able to find someone who will stand by her and make her life happy?

OVO (France, 2023) directed by Stiv Spasojevic. This is the story of the encounter between an extraordinary robot from outer space and an adorable little bird that has just hatched from its egg…

WILFRID GORDON MCDONALD PATRIDGE ( Australia, 2023) directed by Hattie Archibald. When 6-year-old Wilfrid discovers that his 96-year-old friend, Nancy, has lost her memory, he decides to help her find it.

For the Parental Experience section, in the Sala Verde starting at 10 a.m., there will be more short films to watch, after which voting will take place.

We start with 154 (Italy, 2024) directed by directors Andrea Sbarbaro and Riccardo Copreni. A kindergarten teacher is assigned to teach an advanced prototype of artificial intelligence, provided he approaches it as if it were a child.

7 TIMES (Switzerland, 2024) directed by Christine Wiederkehr

AKUFENI (Italy, 2023) directed by Lorenza Longhi and Stefano Pavolini. Four lifelong friends, now elderly, rather depressed and bored of spending their last days playing bowls, decide to perform at a festival for emerging rock bands.

AND NEXT YEAR, WHEN SPRING (Iran, 2023) directed by Saeid Asadi and Mehdi Boroumand. The short film tells the story of a girl whose father is arrested the day before an important test at school. The girl wanders desperately through the village, looking for someone willing to take care of her little brother and thus allow her to take the test.

BURUL (Kyrgyzstan, 2024) directed by Adilet Karzhoev. A rural high school student, Burul, is interested in wrestling. Her wrestling coach does not allow her to attend the men’s gym, so the girl trains at home alone. Burul’s father believes wrestling is not for girls and forbids her to train. Meanwhile, a boy from a neighbouring village, after several failed attempts to talk to her, decides to kidnap Burul to marry her.

TWO BEATS (Italy, 2023) by director Marino Guarnieri. Matilde, a young painter going through a crisis, moves into an old attic full of forgotten objects to rediscover herself. Between dream and reality, one beat at a time, she creates paintings depicting unknown moments, which help her understand the person she will become.

STIGMA (Spain, 2023) directed by Aida Argüelles. Stigma is the story of the resilience of a woman marked by a life full of obstacles. A fighter capable of defeating even her own demons.
