The first edition of the Giffoni Macedonia Youth Film Festival has wrapped up and we are proud to say that it was a huge success. The closing ceremony took place in thel Youth Centre in Skopje, the Macedonian capital city. The formula replicated the same format of the GFF and included a jury composed of 500 youth aged between 10 and 18 from six countries (Albania, Greece, Italy, Romania, Serbia and Macedonia) who were tasked with viewing a selection of films screened at the recent Giffoni Film Festival. The jurors chose REGRET! by Dave Schram for the +13 secion and PIECES OF ME by Nolwenn Lemesle for the +16 one. Italian movie L’ULTIMO GOAL by Federico Di Cicilia, was also in the review. The director attended together with producer Alberto De Matteis.
Durang the closing cerimony an Italian-Macedonian co-production made by GFF production team Luca Apolito, Gianvincenzo Nastasi and Francesco Paglioli was also screened. FOR ANGELA, revolves around the story of a musician who suddenly ceases to play music. He will only be able to go back to playing after his encounter with Angela, another musician, who will inspire and inject the needed creativity in him again.
Giffoni Experience artistic director, Claudio Gubitosi claimed: “Skopje experienced the spirit of Giffoni. The results exceeded all my expectations." The event was wrapped up with a new agreement between the Ministery of Culture of both countries. Macedonia was, moreover, invited by the Provincia di Salerno and by the Italian Embassy as a guest of honour at the Borsa Mediterranea per lo scambio del Turismo Archeologico, to be held in November in Paestum.
"The youth were incredible and showed great enthusiasm and interest -said Gubitosi – in all the workshops. The theatres were full to capacity, the main square in Skopje, with all the statues representing the most important charachters of the history of Macedonia, the thousands of balloons showing the Giffoni-Macedonia logo. Public and private Television. Full rooms. The Macedonian Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kanceska - Milevska visited the festival premises more than once and seemed smitten by all the activities. Italian Ambassador Ernesto Massimino Bellelli and Cultural councillor Alessandra Ksenija Jelen showed great pride for the Giffoni Experience. Darko Basheski, the director of the Film Centre confirmed that the Giffoni formula is to be extended within the upcoming months, to other towns ”.
Whilst in Skopje Giffoni received other cooperation requests by the people in charge of the Film Foundation of the Ministery of Culture in Georgia and by the kids in charge of the Seattle Film Festival. “Campania, once again thanks to Giffoni – claims Gubitosi – is a cultural attractor in the world. Thanks to the collaboration of the Art Academy the Giffoni production team, was able to write and develop a film by young Macedonian students which left the audience in the theatre in awe. Giffoni is set to go back to the Balkans with the ninth edition of Giffoni-Albania, which will take place November 19 - 24 . Then after that we will go to Qatar, where we are collaborating wiht the Doha Film Institute on the first edition of the Ayjal Film Festival to be held November 26 - 30. The ball has already started rolling yet again for the second edition of Giffoni-Sao Paolo to be held in January 2014 for thousands of Brazilian youth. This all happens under the umbrella of the Giffoni World Alliance, because the cooperation with International partners is of the essence and helps to promote the culture of Campania in the world. Just a few days ago I received a phone call by Caterina Miraglia, the Tourism Councillor to Campania, who is in Argentina for an official visit, who was happy to comfirm the interest of the Governor of Buenos Aires to carry out an event with the Giffoni spirit there too. The request is part of an agreement between Regione Campania and Argentina”.
The second edition of the Giffoni Macedonia Youth Film Festival is scheduled to take place in October 2014.
