“In these young people’s eyes I see the same passion for cinema that I had as a child. There is so much love here that I can truly feel the privilege of being an actress”. These were the words that Jessica Chastain, a true giffoner, used to reciprocate the warm embrace of the Giffoni jurors in 2013.

"Forever young" Disney Marathon

A tribute to Walt Disney Company, that has been arousing emotions and entertaining kids and adults since 1923. Today - 28th July - at Sala Alberto Sordi, starting from 15 to 19, in fact, three classical animation pictures, produced by the most important kids entertainment company, will be screened.   The marathon will start with Peter Pan, 14th Disney classic film, that hit the theatres in 1953. Based on James Matthew Barrie’s novel, the movie tells the extraordinary story of Wendy and her three little brothers, who fly side by side with Peter Pan, the kid who never gets old, and the fairy Tinker Bell towards Neverland.   Later on, The Jungle Book by Wolfgang Reitherman. Cartoons aficionados will be captivated by the soundtrack that was nominated for an Academy Award, back in 1968, especially the unforgettable song titled "The Bare Necessities", sung by the protagonist Mowgli and the irresistible bear Baloo. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling’s novel, the story of the orphan boy raised by the panther Bagheera, has moved many generations since it was released in 1967.   Another timeless fairy tale will close the marathon: The Aristocats by Wolfgang Reitherman, released in 1971. We’ll see the adventures of Duchess and her puppies Berlioz, Toulouse, Marie and the irresistible alley cat Thomas O'Malley, that will have to deal with the greedy and evil butler Edgar.

Times change, generations change but Giffoni's mission is firmly grounded to the roots of its existence: keeping intact the values of its global and local mission, capable of telling about millions of people and of being the place and the amplifier for individuals. The theme chosen for this edition is FOREVER YOUNG - PER SEMPRE GIOVANI, inside and out, with love of life, able to contaminate millions of people in this long, hostile and dramatic moment especially for the younger generations.     “Giffoni 43 has many programs, initiatives, little and big– Claudio Gubitosi, Giffoni Experience managing director, said- a group of colourful and mixed lights, of sounds from different areas, of bearers of emotions who want to find in Giffoni a gist to join them to other emotions. Giffoni Experience is a social happening, a phenomenon, and many other things. It’s shared with those who want to live it, those who desire it, who love it, who think it and even organize it. The statistics rank us high everywhere and we are satisfied and proud but at the same time we feel responsible. A warm thanks  goes to the many directors in competition, all of them great, many at their first experience at the festival, the majors and with their peack movies that find in Giffoni the ideal place to propose and promote thier production, the artists that will tell about their experiences to the Materclass kids, the National and International talents. A special thanks goes to the governament regional and local institutions whose support is fundamental for the project complexity, that is necessary, unique and socially and economically useful”.   “We are talking about a big event that, quoting this year’s edition theme, is Forever Young.” These are the words of the Campania Regional President Stefano Caldoro about Giffoni Experience: “We strongly count on this made in Campania excellence, that this year will engage 3.300 kids coming from 41 Nations. Extraordinary numbers for a cultural initiative that is admired and loved by the whole world”, states the president.       THE THEME The 43rd edition theme is Forever Young – Per sempre giovani. After 43 years Giffoni Experience is younger then ever and it wants to stay this way through the dialogue and the continous discovery of what is new. A theme, chosen and shared with the Gff comunity kids, which represents a wish full of ideals. A dreamer’s hope. A vigorous promise. A fire crafted will. A declaration of intent of the way we understand the Giffoni experience. Forever young is an opening for everyone. For everyone who wants to feel alive, regardless of the age.   THE JURIES 3.300 young kids from the age of 3 to 23, coming from 41 nations and 160 Italian cities: these are the numbers of the 43rd edition jurors. Childern and kids will live 10 days together – some will for the first time, some others already have for several years. And they will share the “unique” experience of the festival. This  year more than ever the applications to enter the jury have been so many. Over 20 thousands admission applications, mostly thanks to the web that has made the dialogue between Giffoni and the kids more direct and straightforward. For what concerns the jurors coming from abroad, the new entries are: Cyprus and Georgia. After a few years of absence, the kids form Egypt, Belgium, Australia and Greece are also coming back. Giffoni is an experience shared 365 days a year in a continuous and enduring relationship with its fans and jurors. It was them who chose some of the protagonists of this edition, through the polls on social networks, putting them on the front line in the management of an event that stays unique: the Festilval of the cinema for kids made for kids.   SECTIONS AND MOVIES The cinematographic programme provides 150 movies of which some are long and others short, some are in the competition and others out of it, selected among 2500 productions of 90 countries. The sections in competition are: Elements+3 (from 3 to 5 years), Elements +6 (from 6 to 9 years), Elements+10 (from 10 to 12 years), Generator+13 (from 13 to 15 years), Generator+16 (from 16 to 17 years), Generator+18 (from 18 years on). This years’ news is the selection of short films in contest MasterclassShort Films. The sections out of competition are: Reload/Parental Control ( some of the best movies already distributed in Italy. All certified by Giffoni!), Italian Cinema Forever Young (a selection of young and bubbly italian short films), Focus on Macedonia ( the best of Macedonian cinema for Kids), Focus on Belgian Animation: Les Film du Nord ( selection of animation movies by the Films du Nord production). ELEMENTS +3 - 16 animated feature films coming from 12 nations, realized by using different techinques for a selection that mixes tradition and innovation. Many dates and big room is made for respect towards nature and the animals, recurring subjects for many shorts: A SEA TURTLE STORY,CAT IN THE BAG,HEDGEHOGS AND THE CITY,MY STRANGE GRANDFATHER,STOP LET’S CHANGE OUR FUTURE. ELEMENTS+6 (feature lengh films)– Adventure, action, fanstastic journeys and a big presence, as usual of Germany and northern countries in this selection: V8 – START YOUR ENGINIES! (Germany),NIKO2- LITTLE BROTHER;BIG TROUBLE (Finland),THE FAMOUS FIVE 2(Germany),JOURNEY TO THE CHRISTMAS STAR(Norway). But also more intimate movies that deal with much more complex themes in a measured and kind way. The Austrian A HORSE ON THE BALCONY in which the young protagonist has Asperger Syndrome, the Chinese I SWAN in which a little girl is able to face the loss of her mother thanks to the discovery of a swan in need of help. Finally, the Iranian THE PEARL: in a coast village two kids, children of a pearlfisher, have to find a way to help their father who needs an expensive heart surgery. ELEMENTS+10 (feature lengh films)– Stories from different latitudes to recount pre- teenagers’ anxieties, dreams and great expectations. In BEKAS we follow the impossibile American dream of two Iraqi children. MIKE SAYS GOODBYE! It’s, instead, the story of two young Dutch that deal with the illness and their parents’ reassuring absence, but also with the discovery of how deep their friendship can be. In THE GREEN UMBRELLA we find ourselves in an Iranian wood ( real and symbolic place) with the young protagonist who has to face “ the forest” of conflicting feelings caused by his parents’ split. The German RICKY- THREE’ S A CROWD is the story of a moment of choice and transformation for the young protagonist who deals with the first love and with his father’s dramatic working situation. The magic and torn apart Africa is depicted through the eyes of the very young protagonist ofHORIZON BEAUTIFUL: the dream of becoming a great football player and the arrive of the European talent scout seems a precious chance to exploit. We find Alpine landscapes in the Swiss thriller CLARA AND THE SECRET OF THE BEARS and in the Italian LA STORIA DI CINO, IL BAMBINO CHE ATTRAVERSò LE MONTAGNE. In the former the protagonist has to find out the secret that hides behind the strange visions that have been torturing her since she moved to a new house. In the latter we go back in time to find out the very hard life of children forced to work far from home in order to help their families.   GENERATOR +13 (feature lengh films) – Generator +1 has the most  heterogeneous and articulated selection that ever happened. Seven themes for seven movies, like different pieces of a puzzle shaped like a generational panorama – that of pre teenagers- threatened by fears, distress, social and existential problems, but also run through by a wind of hope and desire. In the Taiwanese TOUCH OF LIGHT, a true story produced by the brilliant and visionary Wong Kar Way, the physical handicap is faced with the lightness and the determination of someone who has ispiration to guide him and love, friendship to protect him. A moving story, without slush. In another case, instead- we are talking about the Dutch REGRET- the “problematic body” becomes an insurmountable obstacle to the achievement of happiness and it causes the dark evil of school bullying taken to extreme dramatic consequences. In the Turkish Huseyin Tabak’s debut movie – YOUR BRAUTY WORTHS NOTHING an Austrian production- the problem of the integration of the “foreign boy” in a contest that appears to be rejecting and punishing is told in a prospective that is constantly careful to its twelve year old protagonist’s look. Actual and lively theme – that of social and cultural integration -  which like an earthquake goes through the new European order, more and more a croassroad of people and different Countries. Not less interesting is the “thematic” matter that can be imagined about the American THE INCREDIBLE DEFEAT OF MISTER AND PETE  that can count on the executive production and on the music of a pop-soul star like Alicia Keys, on a front-rank cast among which Jennifer Hudson stands out (Golden Globe for “Dreamgirls”) and on an important direction. But the movie strong point is the story: hard, difficult, real and authentic like the degraded life, but lived with extreme strength and dignity, by the two younger protagonists forced to fight in a cruel America, where the parental figures shattered because of the misery. Hard life, suburban life the one told by the other debut movie that takes part in the contest: the French movie ASPHALT PLAYGROUND. The director focuses on the “invisible minority”, on those people that want their children far from the temptations of a suburban life made of drugs, violence and easy money, never hiding the violence and the drama that nestles in many very human events. There’s struggle in the movie BLACK DIAMOND as well, by using a documentary overlook it unveils that sort of contemporary “ slave trade” which is the savage, ruthless, very lucrative enrolment of young Africans who have their head filled with dreams of glory and are ready to any sacrifice in order to become the new stars of the world football. A baffling work that finally puts the salt in the painful and open wound of a society, the European one, that defines itself as civil, but that reveals to be barbarian for the way it swallows and spits so much youth full of dreams. Finally WINDSTORM flying the German flag.  Among the movies in contest this one is the most delicate and the closest to the the classical dynamics of the story for kids a sit is regarded in a traditional sense. The dream, the growth, the relationship with the nature and the animals in a work that  raises the “female quota” avarage for the GENERATOR+13, this year dominated by male protagonists without any doubt.    GENERATOR+16 (feature lengh films) - A journey to the discovery of emotions, passions, dreams in the difficult passage between adolescence to adulthood. The search for one’s own true identity in a generation that changes and crashes with the reality it lives. These are the themes proposed in the Generator+16 section. The protagonist of BEFORTE SNOWFALL, a road movie that crosses Europe form East to West, is a very young Kurd in his desperate and very dangerous jorney hot on the trail of his older sister. His mission consists in killing the girl in order to give the lost honour back to his family. As a matter of fact his sister ran away with a man who was not her betrothed one, and she has shamed her father and only her death will make up for it. The discovery of love, the pain and the hard lessons given by the street, unexpected meetings will supply borders that will reveal themselves to be even more difficult to overcome than the geographical ones.  In the picture LES APACHES a group of friends sneaks into a prestigious and empty mansion during the night. After partying and drinking on the pool edge and after enjoying the luxury provided by the house, the kids steal two ancient shotguns and some other objects of little value before slipping away. This trivial bravado activates an unpredictable chain of events that will lead to shoking conclusions. A minimal structured low budget movie that devolves upon a realistic narration though achieving in keeping alive a constant sense of alert in the spectator, creating a steady tension.  Among the many movies that tell about the Second Wolrd War, LORE situates in a completely innovative position, somehow controversial, presenting a new point of view, that is absolutely original. The protagonists of the story are five childrean of a couple of high nazi officers who at the beginning of the movie are arrested and taken away by the victorious allies. The war is over. Lore is the eldest of the five, a fourteen year old girl, and she must take care of the family’s survival in a devastated Germany, shaken by the war and by the  fall of Nazism. She has to learn how  to trust who she was tought to hate and she has to stop believing in what was always her certain knowledge. An original movie for its narrative choise, evocative and amazing for the visual impact. In the bizzare comedy THE DEFLOWERING OF EVA VAN END, an over the lines and  sometimes grottesque film, we see what can be the result of the collision between absolut perfection and the life of common people. A young German boy is a guest at a “normal” Dutch family’s house for a cultural student Exchange. The boy is impossibly charismatic, handsome and seductive, the dazzling smile and a cover look, refined in the manners. He can seduce whoever he meets and his actions only have perfect results. His charisma is such that it generates the overwhelming desire of being liked by him and of measuring up in the people around him. The recall to Wes Anderson’s comedies can be sensed and it is very effective. In contest also the debut film of the Spanish director Diego Quemada-Diaz THE GOLDEN CAGE, a work that  charms, touches for the extraordinary poetry of which it is full of  and it can move both for the interpreters’ naturalness and both for the realism of the simple, sweet and moving story. Three young boys leave from Guatemala and pass thorugh Mexico hoping to get the dream of the USA.  The golden cage referred to in the title is America, that exploits clandestine workers, keeps them hidden in its womb and condemns them to a one- way destiny in illegality and poverty. The performance of the very young non professional actors is amazing. A movie that makes us travel between pursued desires and  unattainable dreams, alternating moments of delicate beauty and discouraging tragedies. Erell is the teenage protagonist of the French movie THE PIECES OF ME. During the days of her summer holyday, the girl takes care of her mother, chronically (maybe imaginary) ill, depressed and sometimes oppressive. Her relationship with this difficult woman is constantly in balance between plain hate and hidden love. On the other hand the father, with whom she has almost no dialogue, ignores her. She rejects him and then searches him, she provokes him and then escapes him, and so on over and over. Such an already uncertain family balance suffers another serious blow when Erell’s elder sister unexpectedly comes back home many years after she ran away leaving no trace. This movie is a refined family report with an original and fresh overlook, that underlines the contradictions and the great instabilities which are typical of the passage from teenage years to adulthood.   GENERATOR +18(feature lengh films) – Parents and children, teenagers that embark on life and mothers and fathers incapable of fully understanding them are the central idea that ties the movies of GENERATOR+18 section together. Now in its 3rd year of life, this section represents a cruel and estreme insight on the intergenerational relationship prompts and reasons for discussion and reflection to the jurors of this section ( teenagers and adults) Parents’ and children’s behaviour is the main theme of THE WILD ONES by the Spanish director Patricia Ferreira that tells the story of Alex, Gabi and Oki, three teenagers who love spending their time crossing the limits their families and society impose them in a context where they will be more and more put aside rather than being helped. The complex role of mother is recounted in BURNOUT, Verena Frytag’s German movie, in which Pelin, a young single woman and mother of three children (belonging to three different fathers), lives in a suburb in Berlin and works as a tatoo artist. The social service want to take her children away (one of them swallows some drug taken home by Edin, a boy Pelin hangs out with) but she obtains to go and live with them in an institute for troubled mothers. A path will start and Pelin will be forced to deal with her past and she’ll have to make important decisions in order to be a good mother. Instead the protagonist of IT FELT LIKE LOVE (Eliza Hittman’s English film) is Lila, a fourteen year old who is spending a boring  summer in Brooklyn with her friend Chiara and her boyfriend Patrick. Determined to have her own romantic experience, Lila starts to bother Sammy, a much older guy, and also starts to daydream about her relationship with him and to manipulate reality.  This will lead her to a situation and a territory unknown to her, forcing her to face the hard reality. Another German movie in contest is OH BOY, Jan Ole Gerster’s comedy, in which Niko, 20year-old something who lives adrift in Berlin streets, curiously follows the way people face everyday life. But one day everything changes and Niko is compelled to confront himself with the consequences of his own passiveness: his girlfriend ends their relationship, his father cuts off the money for the college and a psychiatric diagnosis states he suffers from “an emotional madness”… A true story is the centre of THE GIRL WITH NINE WINGS ( co-produced by Belgium and Germany and directed by Marc Rothemund). Sophie is a 21 years old very vital girl, she is diagnosed with a pleura tumour and starts the chemotherapy. The discovery of the illness doesn’t effect her desire to live and so she starts writing a blog animated by several characters that she plays time after time, using diffetent wigs as modus vivendi of diffent girls. The Roman hamlet is narrated and depicted in the only Italian movie of the section, TRE GIORNI DOPO by Daniele Grassetti and starring Giorgio Colangeli, Paolo Sassanelli and Alessandro Roja. Matteo, Sandro and Nicola find themselves in incredibile events in stories of underworld, gambling, drugs, booze and thefts. A grottesque frame is the background to this comedy of “normal” guys that find themselves to fear for their own security and to defend themselves from the adults. The American Trevis Fine’s ANY DAY NOW ( starring an amzing Alan Cumming) tells the story of the love of a gay couple for a  down syndrome boy abandoned by his mother. Their non conventional way of living is discovered by the authorities and the two men have to fight against the legal system in order to save the life of the boy they learnt to love as their own.   PREMIERES, PREVIEWS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Once again Giffoni offers its jurors and its audience a rich programme of premieres and previews of the titles that will be in the Italian theatres during the next cinematographic season. For those who love the adventures of the pirate Jack Sparrow the date of 18th July  must be signed on the calendar: there will be a special marathon that will rivisit all the four movies that compose THE PIRATES OFTHE CARIBBEAN saga. Nadia seems to have forgotten to invite him and to make things even more complicated his parents are going through a crisis. These are the new three Masterclass dimentions: MASTERCLASS LAB: only for old Masterclass – which is to say those who already have attended the previous editions of this format. The Lab will have two fundamental moments: a theatrical mise- en –scene and the documentary about the staging of this performance. It all starts from a text that will be chosen with the masterclass students and thanks to the help of a professional coach (actor or director) it will be turned into a piece to perform during the festival. MASTERCLASS MUSIC: In Giffoni the protagonists of many generations of the Italian music will meet the kids to illustrate the paths they chose in the making of music. MASTERCLASS MUSIC is a place in which the artists, far form schemes and conventions, will tell us the most intimate aspects of their works in all honesty. MASTERCLASS EXPERIENCE: The “dimention” that inherits the old masterclass section. Meetings with the celebs of the world of cinema, arts, History, culture, journalism, politics. And there will be something more, the chance to see and vote International, avant-guarde, very classy, high cinematographic quality short films: an incredibile opportunity to stay jurors and measure up with shining personalities that will help to increase the knowledge of those who will take part in it.   GIFFONI MUSIC EXPERIENCE The Giffoni Music Concept returns to the Giffoni Experience with an exclusive series of concerts that will take place on the stage that was specially set up at the council stadium“Giuseppe Troisi” in Giffoni Valle Piana.
