Films in competition, 20 July

Elements +6 section is scheduled to watch Antboy by Ask Hasselbalch (Denmark, 2013) at 15:00 in Sala Alberto Sordi). While the school bullies are chasing him, Pelle hides in his neighbour’s garden and gets stung by an ant. The day after he realizes he has gained the powers of the ant: super strength, a heightened sense of smell, the ability to climb walls. Soon friend Wilhelm persuades Pelle to become a superhero and use his powers to fight crime. Unfortunately a scary opponent called The Flea shows up and kidnaps Amanda, the little girl Pelle is secretly in love with. Will Antboy manage to defeat him?

The Nightingale by Philippe Muyl (Cina/France, 2013), scheduled for Elements +10 children (9:30, Sala Alberto Sordi), follows old Chinese farmer Zhigen, who decides to make the long journey from Beijing to Yangshuo to honour a promise he made to his wife. He takes along his granddaughter Renxin, a child brought up in the lap of luxury. While grandfather and granddaughter set out on their journey,  Chongyi and Qianing, Zhigen’s son and daughter-in-law respectively, ponder on the meaning of the life they have led in the sole pursuit of success and money.

For Generator +13 jurors it’s the turn of Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, by Mathias Malzieu and Stephane Berla (France, 2013), scheduled at 14:30 in Sala Truffaut. Edinburgh, 1874. Jack is born on the coldest day in history and therefore his heart remains frozen and can’t beat. Midwife Madeleine saves his life by replacing his defective heart with a cuckoo clock. The boy will survive, but only if he obeys three rules: he must never touch the hands of the clock; he must control his anger and he must never ever fall in love. But the moment Jack sets eyes on Miss Acacia, the hands of his clock-heart begin to race...

Beneath the Harvest Sky by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly (USA, 2013) is scheduled at 10:00 in Sala Alberto Sordi for Generator +16 section. Best friends Casper and Dominic dream of fleeing from the small farming town in Maine where they have grown up together. During harvest break, Casper is drawn into smuggling drugs with his father, while Dominic works hard hoping to earn enough money to buy a car which can take them both away towards a better future. But their friendship will be put to the test as they are forced to make adult decisions that will forever alter the course of their lives.

Lastly, Generator +18 section is scheduled to watch The Word by Anna Kazejak (Poland/Denmark, 2014),  at 10:00 in Sala Lumière. When young Lila finds out that her boyfriend Janek kissed another girl her world fall apart, since he only had eyes for her apparently.  A few days before the end of the school year Lila gives Janek an ultimatum: he has twenty-four hours to prove his true love, otherwise he can forget about ever being with Lila again.
