The films in competition on 25 July 2023

The sixth day of screenings begins at 10 am with POPULAR THEORY (USA 2023, 87') in Sala Sordi. The feature film in competition, reserved for ELEMENTS +10 (with another screening at 5pm), tells the story of the brilliant Erwin, the youngest student in high school. She is smart but struggles with social isolation, and for this reason she ends up under the scrutiny of director Ali Ascher. When Erwin meets fellow science guru Winston, the two team up to invent a chemical that will change the high school hierarchy forever.

At 10 a.m. and at 4 p.m., in Sala Lumière for ELEMENTS +6, the feature film in competition is ADVENTURES IN THE LAND OF ASHA. Director Sophie Farkas Bolla introduces the main character Jules, who is expelled from school because of his rare skin disease. We are in northern Quebec and Jules' greatest wish is to be cured. When his dog escapes, he follows him and meets Asha, a mysterious indigenous girl. Together they venture to the other side of the forest, where nature proves to be full of life and secrets.

Also in the morning, at 10 o'clock in Sala Verde, there will be a screening of LE MIE RAGAZZE DI CARTA, PARENTAL EXPERIENCE section. This out-of-competition feature film, made in 2022, is set in Italy. It is the end of the 1970s, in the Treviso area, and the great economic and social changes are also affecting the cinemas. To avoid bankruptcy, the cinemas had to resort to a red-light programming.

For the GEx Doc is scheduled, in Sala Galileo at 4 pm, MIGHTY AFRIN: IN THE TIME OF FLOODS. Directed by Angelos Rallis (Greece, France, 2023), it is the story of a 12-year-old orphan named Afrin. Home is her whole world, but she must leave it because of a flood.  In Dhaka, a city full of danger and mystery, Afrin faces the impossible, but befriends a group of fellow orphans and never gives up hope of reuniting with her father and living a better life. Admission is free until full, priority will be given to parents in the ELEMENTS +6 and +10 section.

At the end of the day, for the special EVENTS section, there will be the screening of the out-of-competition feature film BARBIE, reserved for the jurors of the Generator sections. Barbie will be shown at 19.30 in the SALA TRUFFAUT. At 21.30, out of competition COMIZI D'AMORE will be screened in the Rassegna section, "Written and directed by Pier Paolo". In this documentary, Pasolini travels through Italy from south to north, interviewing all types of Italians about their sexuality, a taboo subject at the time
