July 24 marks a turning point for #Giffoni53: it’s the fifth day of screenings for the jurors of the various sections. The jurors will follow many stories today, ranging from serious family problems to unexpected friendships, to teenagers who refuse to remain silent with the intent to bring the truth to the surface.

Among the first events of the day - at 10 a.m. - the jurors of the Generator +16 section will watch in Sala Truffaut the film LONGING FOR THE WORLD (France, 2023), directed by Jenna Hasse. During a particularly hot summer day, three strangers find themselves seeking some relief on the shores of Lake Geneva. Margaux is a sweet fourteen-year-old, Juliette is a rebellious teenager and, finally, Joël is a fisherman returned from Indonesia. All three end up spending some time together until reality comes to pull them apart.

The boys and the girls of the Generator +16 section will also have the chance to see the film SEA SPARKLE (Belgium and the Netherlands, 2023) directed by Domien Huyghe, in Sala Truffaut at 4.45 p.m. In a town on the North Sea, a fisherman dies in unclear circumstances, and his death falls on the captain, accused of making a fatal mistake. Lena, his teenage daughter, is convinced that this death was caused by a giant sea monster.

In Sala Alberto Sordi, the jurors of the Elements +10 section will have the opportunity to watch the film SCRAPPER (United Kingdom, 2022), directed by Charlotte Regan, at 5 p.m. In the outskirts of London, twelve-year-old Georgie, raised by her mother, finds herself living alone after her mother passes. Despite the difficulties, Georgie tries to prove to herself and those around her that she can live without anyone's help. Her plans change when Jason, a thirty-year-old who claims to be her father and whom she hasn't seen in many years, shows up. Why has he returned to her? What are his intentions?

The young jurors of the Elements +6 section will also have the chance to see the animated film TONY, SHELLY AND THE MAGIC LIGHT (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, 2023), directed by Filip Pošivač. Eleven-year-old Tony was born with a very peculiar feature: he glows. Because of this, his parents try to protect him from the outside world by keeping him locked inside their house. The arrival of a girl named Shelly in the building represents his first encounter with someone his age. But Shelly also has a special secret: she is a magic torch. Together, they embark on an adventure that leads them to discover what lies in the dark corners of the building.

The jurors of the Generator +18 section will watch, in Sala Galileo,BIG SLEEP (South Korea, 2022), directed by Tae-Hoon Kim. Gilho is a teenager who has run away from home due to repeated abuse from his stepfather. Kiyoung, known for having a tough character, decides to host the young man for a few nights when they randomly meet in a hut warmed by an electric stove. This new friendship leads both of them to confront painful aspects of their lives. The balance is disrupted by the arrival of Gilho's friends, leading Kiyoung to make a drastic decision.

Following this screening, in Sala Galileo at 4 p.m., the Gex Doc section will watch the documentary in competition titled THINGS I COULD NEVER TELL MY MOTHER (Bangladesh and France, 2022), directed by Humaira Bilkis. The director of the documentary film tells the evolution of her difficult relationship with her mother. The mother is passionate about art and even passes this passion on to her daughter Humaira. However, after participating in the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, her life changes drastically. She loses interest in art, stops going out and isolates herself in her apartment in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she lives with her daughter. Suddenly, she becomes opposed to the idea of Humaira being a director, urging her to stop making films. In this atmosphere of tension, there is a secret she hasn't confessed to her mother: she is in a relationship with a Hindu man.

Please note that for the Gex Doc screening, entry is free until all seats are taken, giving high priority to the parents of jurors from the Elements +6 and Elements +10 sections.
