BIG CELEBRATION FOR THE LAST APPOINTMENT OF THE MOVIE DAYS 2018: A RECORD EDITION, 60 DAYS WITH MORE THAN 15 THOUSAND STUDENTS

The 23rd edition of MOVIE DAYS, the cinema days for the school created and proposed by Giffoni Experience, is coming to an end, with 60 appointments - including the MOVIE DAYS On Tour - from March to May

The 23rd edition of MOVIE DAYS, the cinema days for the school created and proposed by Giffoni Experience, is coming to an end. Once again, with 60 appointments - including the MOVIE DAYS On Tour - from March to May in the Truffaut Hall of the Citadella of Cinema, the initiative has reached record numbers: over 15,000 students, aged 6 to 18, together with 2,000 teachers, coming from 5 Regions and 12 Provinces of central-southern Italy such as Campania (Salerno, Naples, Avellino, Caserta and Benevento), Molise (Isernia), Basilicata (Potenza), Lazio (Latina and Rome) and Puglia (Taranto).

Movie Days 2018 has ended. It was renewed and organized by our team in an excellent way, involving thousands of students and teachers from Campania and other regions”, commented the director of Giffoni Experience, Claudio Gubitosi. “I would like to thank the managers, the teachers, all the students of every year and grade, the testimonials, the facilitators, the Giffoni team and the students of the “Glorioso” institute, good, precious and polite kids in their second combined work/study experience. My thanks also goes to CiAl, that for years has been close to Giffoni: in 2018 CiAl has wished to redouble its efforts, providing students with the opportunity to train their creativity through the provision of 60 drones.

The Aluminum Packaging Consortium (CiAl) intends to reinforce its commitment to collaborate with Giffoni Experience also because of the theme chosen for the three-year period 2018-2020: the protection of the environment in all its forms, starting with primary elements such as water, air and earth. And indeed, CiAl has chosen to donate, every day, to the School that most distinguished itself during the debate, a drone for video footage equipped with action cams. Since 1994, the Festival has attracted 470,000 students and 85,000 teachers and - from 21 July 2017 - is part of the memorandum of understanding between Giffoni Experience and the Ministry of Education, the University and the Research to promote cinema as a tool for knowledge, learning and individual development in schools. A goal that has transformed Giffoni into a landmark for intellectual development and enrichment, not only for thousands of children but also for their teachers.

This years edition has not stayed within the walls of the Citadella of Cinema in Giffoni Valle Piana: MOVIE DAYS, in fact, were also held in the town of Pagani, while outside the region the event conquered Sardinia - with six appointments for the students of the province of Nuoro - and Veneto, where for three days 12 schools of the Basso Piave have been able to fully live through the Giffoni experience. Bullying, Respect for the Environment, History and Legality are part of the guidelines followed by the Festival; these themes are deepened and analysed in the audiovisual works selected ad hoc according to the age range of the giffoners. Heart of the DAYS, as tradition, is the selection of the most interesting feature films from the latest editions of the Giffoni Film Festival. This is the case of the acclaimed “Edhel”, the debut film by young Neapolitan director Marco Renda, who in 2017 was ranked second in the Elements+6 section. Make way also to the animation, with the valiant protagonist of “Richard the Stork” by Toby Genkel and Reza Memari, and the adventurous “Coconut - The little Dragon” by Nina West and the deep and delicate “Phantom Boy” by Jean- Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol.

Make room for great premieres of the Giffoni Film Festival: in 2017 the exhilarating “Diary of a Whimpy Kid: the Long Haul” by David Bowers, presented during the 47th edition, was proposed to the schools. Also in the program “Sicilian Ghost Story” signed by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza, and to close the rich collection of works the fantasy “A Monster Calls” by Juan Antonio Bayona, the charming “Lady Bird” by Greta Gerwig and 'Girl in Flight' directed by Sandra Vannucci (the film was presented in 2017 in the Parental Control section). There were also testimonials, who wanted to tell their experience to the children, contributing to the debate and answering to the questions of the giffoners. Among the exponents of Amnesty International and Telefono Azzurro, the psychologists Alfredo Toriello and Eterna Pizza, the journalist Titti Marrone, Tullio Foà, of the Jewish community of Naples, the blogger Francesco Uccello and Valerio Calabrese, of Salerno Legambiente.

To capture the attention of the students are not only the events shown on the big screen and the experiences told by the many guests: the successfull photocall project was re-proposed. A photo taken by hundreds of classes of students for a snap-souvenir or by single groups to take part in the “Selfie Days” contest. The competition has given schools the opportunity to try their hand at selfies, in order to win a front row seat to premieres and special events of the 48th edition. Thanks to this initiative, the event has become increasingly social, with over a thousand like conquered on Facebook in two months and 6455 pictures shared on Instagram with the hashtag #MovieDays. Last tassel that composed the 2018 Edition of DAYS MOVIE was the combined work/study project that involved over 60 students of the Technical Economic Institure “Gian Camillo Glorioso” of Giffoni Valle Piana and the school complex of Montecorvino Rovella. Young people have participated in the promotion of the project, becoming part of the Secretariat, as well as having used the knowledge acquired in the classroom.
