Nicholas Hoult: “Fear separates, Giffoni binds together"

Punctual, kind and wise: Nicholas Hoult is a real rarity among young Hollywood actors, as he’s also proved to the Meet and Greet youth, who’s come from all over Italy to meet him at the Giffoni Film Festival. A girl tells him she’s travelled 600 km just to say hallo, another one asks his used water bottle as a gift, and he promptly satisfies her with a sweet hug, blushing with surprise.

Several jurors ask him about Skins, the British TV hit which brought him fame, after his appearance in About a Boy, opposite Hugh Grant. “To me – he says – it’s been a great training ground. It’s changed the way to tell about children, because it was also written by young authors. And to think after the audition, when they offered me the part of a rebel, I said to myself: why do they want just me? He and I are worlds apart!”. When somebody asks him about the way he relates with directors, he replies: “It’s just a matter of trust. You must feel comfortable and safe, so that you can let yourself go, without losing your identity”.

In view of these times we’re living in, to British actor Giffoni is more important than ever, as he explains when asked about Brexit: “I was quite disappointed, I didn’t expect it. I like being European, but I think things might work out on their own. It seems like fear is separating people and the world is getting smaller. That’s also why being here is so amazing”.

His day at the Festival goes, just like goes on the youth experience here at Giffoni 2016. “Have fun at the GFF, keep on loving cinema and writing your things, since they will be source of inspiration for everything else”.
