Greta was born in Sacramento in 1983. She graduated in English Literature and Philosophy from Barnard College.

After a small role in LOL (2006) by Joe Swanberg, she took part in the Mumblecore cinematographic movement which has as main characteristics a low budget, the use of digital cameras, very young characters, improvised screenplays and not professional actors.

She also founded a theater group called "The Tea Party Ensemble". In 2007 she acted without a screenplay in HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS and in 2009 she directed with Swanberg the film NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS.

In 2010 she starred in GREENBERG with Ben Stiller, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Brie Larson. In 2011, she worked in NO STRINGS ATTACHED, in TO ROME WITH LOVE by Woody Allen, and in the teen-movie DAMSELS IN DISTRESS. Her following films as an actress are: FRANCES HA, by Noah Baumbach; MISTRESS AMERICA (2015); MAGGIE'S PLAN by Rebecca Miller, with Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore; WIENER-DOG by Todd Solondz; JACKIE by Pablo Larrain with Nathalie Portman.

With her directorial debut, LADY BIRD (2017), she told of her adolescence and won a Golden Globe for the best comedy, while Saoirse Ronan won the Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy. In 2019, with LITTLE WOMEN Greta received her third Oscar Nomination (best non original screenplay). BARBIE is the most recent film she directed.
