Diego Quemada-Díez
Born 1969, Burgos (Spain). His first job in the film industry was in 1995 as a camera assistant in LAND AND FREEDOM by K. Loach. In 1996 he worked as a camera assistant in THINGS I NEVER TOLD YOU by I. Coixet. Then he graduated in Cinematography at the American Film Institute. In 2001 he directed his graduation short film, A TABLE IS A TABLE. In 2003 he worked as a camera operator in 21 GRAMS by A.G. Iñárritu, which allowed him to work with directors such as F. Meirelles, T. Scott, O. Stone, S. Lee. In 2006 he shot two short films, I WANT TO BE A PILOT and LA MORENA. LA JAULA DE ORO, his first feature as a director, was screened in the “Un Certain Regard” section at Cannes 2013, winning A Certain Talent Prize and the Gillo Pontecorvo Award.

Nel 1996 è assistente operatore per LE COSE CHE NON TI HO MAI DETTO di I. Coixet. In seguito si diploma in direzione della fotografia all’American Film Institute. Nel 2001 dirige il corto di fine corso A TABLE IS A TABLE. Nel 2003 è operatore per il film di A.G. Iñárritu 21 GRAMMI, che lo porta poi a collaborare con registi come F. Meirelles, T. Scott, O. Stone, S. Lee. Nel 2006 gira altri due corti, I WANT TO BE A PILOT e LA MORENA. LA JAULA DE ORO, il suo primo lungometraggio da regista, ha partecipato a Cannes 2013 nella sezione “Un Certain Regard”, vincendo il premio “Un Certain Talent” e il premio Gillo Pontecorvo.
Director’s statement
“The social reality in Latin America requires cinema to be deeply engaged with the world as it is. I am interested in making films firmly rooted in our contemporary society. True realism has it all: fantasy and reason, suffering and utopia, the happiness and pain of our existence. I want to give voice to migrants – human beings who challenge a system established by impassive national and international authorities by crossing borders illegally, risking their own lives in the hope of overcoming dire poverty. This film is not a documentary, rather it is a fiction based on reality, re-enacting it from a place of authenticity and integrity. We constructed the narrative and poetics of this odyssey from the testimony of hundreds of migrants and from the personal sentiments of each and every person who participated in the creative process. As we identify with Juan and Chauk, we depart from our own daily lives and embark on a grand emotional adventure that delivers us to profound discovery – a journey dispelling the notion that happiness awaits us in a distant place, a journey offering reflection on the borders that divide nations, a journey towards awareness of what separates us as human beings. We made this adventure in the hope of deconstructing those conventions that imprison us so we can reinvent our own reality. My dream is that these boundaries that separate us dissolve, allowing us to board another train. One whose destination doesn’t matter, a train whose passengers all know our all existence is interconnected, a train whose obstacles inspire us to celebrate our existence with respect and conscience that transcends nationalities, races, classes and beliefs”.

“La situazione sociale dell’America Latina necessita di un cinema che sia profondamente impegnato nella realtà del mondo. A me interessa fare film radicati nella società contemporanea. L’autentico realismo ha tutto: fantasia e razionalità, sofferenza e utopia, la felicità e il dolore delle nostre esistenze. Voglio dare voce agli emigranti: esseri umani che sfidano un sistema retto dalle indifferenti autorità nazionali e internazionali, attraversando illegalmente le frontiere, rischiando le loro vite nella speranza di superare la povertà estrema. Questo film non è un documentario, è piuttosto una finzione che si basa sulla realtà, ripresentandola da un punto di vista fatto di autenticità e di integrità. Abbiamo ideato la narrazione e la poetica di questa odissea partendo dalla testimonianza di centinaia di emigranti e dai sentimenti di ognuna delle persone che hanno preso parte al processo creativo. Nel momento in cui ci identifichiamo con Juan e Chauk, ci separiamo dalle nostre vite di tutti i giorni, e intraprendiamo una grande, emozionante avventura che ci porta a una importante scoperta: un viaggio che dissipa l’idea secondo la quale la felicità ci aspetta in un posto lontano, un viaggio che ci fa riflettere sui confini che dividono le nazioni, un viaggio verso la consapevolezza di quello che ci separa come esseri umani. Abbiamo intrapreso quest’avventura nella speranza di smantellare le convenzioni che ci imprigionano, in modo da reinventare la nostra realtà. Il mio sogno è che questi confini che ci separano si dissolvano, permettendoci di salire su un altro treno. Un treno la cui destinazione è indifferente, un treno i cui passeggeri sappiano che tutte le nostre esistenze sono connesse, un treno i cui ostacoli ci ispirino a celebrare le nostre vite con un rispetto e con una coscienza che trascende nazionalità, razze, classi sociali e credenze”.
