Cate Shortland
Born 1968, Temora (Australia). She studied at Sydney University and graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in 1991. In 2000 she graduated from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School with a Graduate Diploma in Directing. Then she directed four short films: STRAP ON OLYMPIA (1995), PENTUPHOUSE (1998), FLOWERGIRL (1999), JOY (2000). In 2004 she directed her first feature film, SOMERSAULT, which premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival in the “Un Certain Regard” section. LORE, her second theatrical feature film, was Australia’s entry at the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Nel 2000 si è diplomata in Regia alla scuola australiana di cinema, televisione e radio. In seguito ha diretto quattro cortometraggi: STRAP ON OLYMPIA (1995), PENTUPHOUSE (1998), FLOWERGIRL (1999), JOY (2000). Nel 2004 ha firmato il suo primo lungometraggio, SOMERSAULT, presentato a Cannes 2004 nella sezione “Un Certain Regard”. LORE, il suo secondo lungometraggio per il cinema, è stato scelto come rappresentante dell’Australia alle nomination per l’Oscar 2013 al miglior film straniero.
Director’s statement
“Lore and her siblings are the privileged children of a high ranking SS officer involved in mass murder in Belarus. While they play hopscotch, children across Europe are being systematically murdered. Lore’s family is untouched until her father returns from the East in 1945. In 1939 Lore’s father was a war hero, in 1945 when the film begins, he is a criminal. I wanted to understand what this does to the psyche of a child. How does a person grow up knowing that those closest to them have committed unimaginable crimes and that genocide happened in the midst of their everyday? What drew me to Lore and at times repulsed and angered me, was the opportunity to delve into the grey areas. Lore is a believer in one of the most abhorrent and destructive political ideologies of our time. I wanted to understand her lack of empathy, her romantic determination to keep believing even when Germany was suffering defeat. Hitler was seen not only as her Fuhrer but also as a beloved father figure. As he stated ‘The weak must be chiselled away. I want young men and women who can suffer pain’, Lore feels it is her duty to carry this pain uncomplainingly. I was drawn to understand her fight with her own humanity and sense of belonging. The outside world is oblivious to Lore and her siblings’ plight and Lore becomes more and more detached from society. But within her detachment is a growing certainty - she is lost and adrift but she knows something of the awful truth. She has been taught never to question but to obey. By the end of the story she is full of questions that she knows will never be answered”.

“Lore e i suoi fratellini sono i figli privilegiati di un alto ufficiale SS coinvolto nel massacro compiuto in Bielorussia. Mentre Lore e i suoi fratelli giocano, in tutta Europa vengono uccisi bambini in modo sistematico. La famiglia di Lore non è toccata da tutto ciò, finché suo padre torna dall’Est nel 1945. Nel 1939 il padre di Lore era un eroe, nel 1945, l’anno in cui inizia il film, è un criminale. Volevo capire che effetto può avere tutto questo sulla psiche di un bambino. Come fa un individuo a crescere sapendo che le persone che gli sono più vicine sono colpevoli di crimini inimmaginabili e di quel genocidio avvenuto nel mezzo della vita di tutti i giorni? Gli aspetti di Lore che mi hanno attratto, e talvolta respinto e irritato, sono stati l’occasione di approfondire le sue zone grigie. Lore crede in una delle più orribili e distruttive ideologie politiche del nostro tempo. Volevo capire la sua mancanza di empatia, la sua appassionata determinazione nel continuare a credere anche quando la Germania stava subendo la sconfitta. Hitler era visto non solo come il Führer, ma anche come una amata figura paterna. Dinanzi alle parole di Hitler: ‘Il debole deve essere spazzato via. Voglio una gioventù che possa sopportare il dolore’, Lore sente di avere il dovere di portare su di sé questo dolore senza lamentarsi. Sono stata attratta dal tentare di comprendere la lotta di Lore con la propria umanità e con il proprio senso di appartenenza. Il mondo esterno è ignaro della situazione di Lore e dei suoi fratellini, e Lore si stacca sempre di più dalla società. Ma dentro di lei questo distacco è una certezza che cresce: lei è perduta e alla deriva, ma sa qualcosa della terribile verità. Le è stato insegnato a non fare domande, a obbedire. Alla fine della storia, Lore è piena di domande alle quali, come lei sa, non sarà mai data una risposta”.
