Director’s statement
TAKING CHANCES is based on the children book Een Kleine Kans by Marjolijn Hof. We believe that the story is a true pearl. It shows the way how a child thinks when she is worried about her father, but in a sincere, beautiful and simple way. Furthermore, it is an actual topic that some children these times might face, without becoming a heavy burden on their shoulders. Trough the eyes of Kiek, the journey is emotional, but funny at the same time. In the end, the story is about a girl in this time and age, that need to learn how to deal with her uncertainties and fear, but also learn how (and when) to open her mouth. Her imaginative digressions lead to crazy, funny and sometimes sad moments. The transition from book to script was certainly not easy at first. We had to find a way to turn her imagination into actual images. We didn’t want to fall back on Voice Overs immediately. This is how we formed the idea of using animations. These are (in their current form) not to literally but playful instead. Otherwise it would all be too gruesome. Furthermore, we added some more storylines and added some depth here and there, because book was not long enough for a feature film. Hence, the musical is a new line. It gives some playfulness to the otherwise heave story that Kiek carries. I believe that we succeeded in creating a movie that is beautiful for both children and adults. You want to make sure that you, at all times, try not to be too patronising or explaining. We wanted it to be a movie of this day and age, but not to heavy at the same time. Children want to laugh as well. In that way, the movie contains both sad as happy emotions and moments. I am very glad that we were able to make a children movie that did not lean on action, but instead on emotion. A movie with its own, unique attitude.
E poi i bambini vogliono ridere.
