Ol Parker
Born 1969, London. After graduating from the University of Cambridge, he worked as a screenwriter for TV movies and feature theatrical films such as LOVED UP (1995) directed by Peter Cattaneo, IN YOUR DREAMS (1997) directed by Simon Cellan Jones, IT WAS AN ACCIDENT (2000) directed by Metin Hüseyin, and THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (2011) directed by John Madden. In 2005, Ol Parker made his directorial debut with the feature film IMAGINE YOU AND ME. NOW IS GOOD is his second feature film as a director.

Director’s statement
When I read the book I loved that the things on Tessa’s list are not grandiose ambitions. They are just the usual experiences that any ordinary teenager wants and deserves, except that here they are invested with the ferocious intensity of someone who knows her life is ending soon. When the producers pitched me a film about a teenage girl, with the title BEFORE I DIE, I almost passed before the end of the meeting. But they persuaded me to read the book and I found myself at 2 o’clock in the morning, blinded by tears, texting them, demanding that I be allowed to write and direct the film. The book is passionate, beautiful and brilliant, and, paradoxically, fantastically life-affirming. The verve and the ferocity with which Tessa lives her life is inspirational, both to the characters inside the story, and anyone reading it. I knew what to write and how to write it, which doesn’t happen very often. That film is about older people confronting their own mortality and I hadn’t really made the connection until recently, but it meant I spent a lot of time thinking about the intensity of the way you lead your life when you know your time is limited.

Quando ho letto il libro da cui il film è tratto, ho apprezzato il fatto che la lista dei desideri di Tessa non fosse composta da sogni grandiosamente ambiziosi. La ragazza aspira alle tradizionali esperienze che un’adolescente cerca e si merita. L’unica differenza è che i suoi sogni sono caratterizzati dalla selvaggia intensità di chi ha la consapevolezza che la sua vita sta per finire. Quando i produttori mi hanno proposto un film su un’adolescente intitolato BEFORE I DIE, sulle prime ho pensato di rifiutare. Ma poi mi hanno convinto a leggere il libro, e mi sono ritrovato, alle due di notte, accecato dalle lacrime, a sperare di essere scelto per scrivere e dirigere il film. Il libro è appassionato, bello, brillante e, paradossalmente, vitale. Il brio e il vigore con cui Tessa vive la sua vita è d’ispirazione sia per i personaggi della storia, sia per i lettori. Sapevo benissimo cosa scrivere e come scriverlo, cosa che non accade molto spesso. Il film parla di persone che si confrontano con la loro mortalità, aspetto che non avevo mai considerato fino a poco tempo fa, ragion per cui ho passato molto tempo a pensare all’intensità con cui si vive quando si è consapevoli di avere poco tempo da vivere.
