François Truffaut (1932-1984)
Critic and film maker, one of the founders of the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague). After a troubled childhood marked by absence of his father and a difficult relationship with school, he became fond of cinema. The fatherly figure of the film theorist André Bazin introduced him to the film criticism and the film magazine «Cahiers du Cinéma», written by critics who will be directors of the New Wave. In 1959 he made his first feature, THE 400 BLOWS (LES 400 COUPS), which launched the New Wave and started the movie series based on Antoine Doinel character played by Jean-Pierre Léaud. Then he directed masterpieces such as JULES AND JIM (JULES ET JIM, 1962), DAY FOR NIGHT (LA NUIT AMÉRICAINE, 1973), THE STORY OF ADELE H. (L'HISTOIRE D'ADÈLE H., 1975), THE GREEN ROOM (LA CHAMBRE VERT, 1978).

Critico e regista, è stato uno dei fondatori del movimento della Nouvelle Vague. Dopo un’infanzia difficile segnata dall’assenza del padre e da un aspro rapporto con le istituzioni scolastiche, viene preso dalla passione per il cinema. La figura paterna del teorico del cinema André Bazin lo introduce alla critica e alla rivista «Cahiers du Cinéma», su cui scrivono i futuri autori della Nouvelle Vague. Nel 1959 dirige il suo primo lungometraggio, I 400 COLPI (LES 400 COUPS), il film che lancia la Nouvelle Vague e apre la serie di opere dedicate al personaggio di Antoine Doinel, interpretato da Jean-Pierre Léaud. Seguiranno capolavori come JULES E JIM (JULES ET JIM, 1962), EFFETTO NOTTE (LA NUIT AMÉRICAINE, 1973), ADELE H., UNA STORIA D'AMORE (L'HISTOIRE D'ADÈLE H., 1975), LA CAMERA VERDE (LA CHAMBRE VERT, 1978).
