Avie Luthra
The Indian director Avie Luthra was born in Rochdale (England). In 2002 he graduated from the Director’s Course at the National Film and Television School in the UK. In 2003 he wrote an episode for the TV series CANTERBURY TALES and the 60 minute TV movie INDIAN DREAM. In 2005 he directed the short film LUCKY, which was screened at GFF 2005 (“Free to Fly” section) and was nominated for the BAFTA Award 2006. In 2009 he made his first feature film, MAD, SAD AND BAD. His second feature film, LUCKY, is based on the short film of the same title. He is also a licensed Forensic Psychiatrist.

Director’s statement
In 2003 I was living in rural Natal where the HIV prevalence was close to 40%. Driving around at weekends, you would see coffins loaded onto bakkies (trucks) as funerals took place around the province. It was at one of these funerals I saw a small 10-year-old boy weeping into the grave of his recently buried mother. The moment was as casual as a child playing with a toy. It was nothing but a brief glimpse into his pain and then it was gone. But the future of that boy struck me deeply and made me wonder how he links into all the street children and homeless boys you see at traffic lights in South African cities. That, and my experience in post-apartheid Durban witnessing the clear tensions between Africans and Indians who were finally mixing after decades of legal and economic segregation, made me realize there was a story to tell. What would happen to an elderly, time-worn racist Indian, if he or she had to confront this new South African presence head on? The shoot was 26 days. We had an excellent cast and my approach was to ignore the script and open out scenes with as much improvisation as possible. I wanted scenes to feel energized and real and so set them up with big headers and long tails, always keeping an eye on what I wanted. The shooting style matched this. It was all hand-held often walking, sometimes running and invariably falling. My camera-man and designer set up a sense of chaos and looseness that was exhilarating at times.

Nel 2003 vivevo nella provincia rurale del Natal, dove la diffusione del virus HIV era intorno al 40%. Percorrendone le strade nei fine settimana, si vedevano bare caricate sui camion e funerali per tutta la provincia. A una di queste funzioni ho visto un bambino di 10 anni piangere sulla tomba della madre da poco sepolta. È stato un incontro fortuito, quasi come vedere un bambino divertirsi con un giocattolo. Ho potuto osservare il suo dolore solo per un breve attimo. Ho provato una profonda tristezza pensando al suo futuro, e mi sono domandato quanto avesse in comune con gli altri bambini di strada e i ragazzi senzatetto che si vedono ai semafori delle città sudafricane. Questo, insieme alla mia esperienza di testimone della Durban del post-Apartheid e delle forti tensioni tra indiani e neri che finalmente iniziavano a mescolarsi dopo decenni di segregazione giuridica ed economica, mi ha fatto capire che c’era una storia da raccontare. Cosa sarebbe accaduto a un anziano, debilitato indiano razzista, se avesse dovuto affrontare il nuovo volto del Sudafrica? Abbiamo girato il film in 26 giorni. Il cast è stato eccellente, e il mio metodo consisteva nel non tener conto della sceneggiatura, lasciando più spazio possibile all’improvvisazione. Lo stile di regia si accorda a questi elementi. Tutto è ripreso con la macchina a mano, spesso camminando, talvolta correndo e, inevitabilmente, cadendo. Il mio operatore e lo scenografo hanno creato un senso di caos e di indeterminatezza a tratti trascinante.
