Tara Johns
Born in Canada. In 2001 she directed her first fiction film, KILLING TIME, which was awarded Best Canadian Short at the 2001 Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival. Later she made the TV documentary THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF GIRLS (2005). THE YEAR DOLLY PARTON WAS MY MOM is her first feature film.

Director’s statement
This film feels like home to me on every level. It’s an expression of where I come from and what preoccupies me still. Identity and belonging. Like pretty much anyone who’s ever gone through adolescence, I relate to Elizabeth’s struggle to both ‘stand out’ and ‘fit in’. To be different – like everybody else. And especially as a girl growing up in the early days of feminism, I still – even to this day – come up against complex questions of identity and belonging – of ‘how to be’ in the world. But really, I think we all seek to define ourselves in different ways throughout our lives. It’s part of the human experience. Every one of us has a need to feel we belong to somewhere, to someone. However, not all of us are willing to put it all on the line to find that somewhere or that someone. At 11 years of age, my lead character Elizabeth puts it all on the line. She lets go of fitting in favour of becoming herself. She’s an ordinary girl who sets herself an extraordinary task in a bid to find her identity and her true ‘voice’. The journey of bringing this story to the screen is nowhere near as courageous as the journey Elizabeth embarks on to realize her dream – but it has taken just as much faith and determination. Not to mention, a little divine intervention from our mutual muse, Dolly Parton”.

“Questo film mi fa sentire a casa in ogni senso. È espressione dei temi da cui sono partita e che ancora mi assillano: l’identità e l’appartenenza. Come chiunque sia stato adolescente, mi sento vicina alla lotta interiore di Elizabeth per ‘affermarsi’ e per ‘adattarsi’. Per essere diversa, come chiunque altro. Ancora oggi io, che sono cresciuta ai primi tempi del femminismo, continuo ad affrontare i temi dell’identità e dell’appartenenza, del ‘come stare’ al mondo. Ma in realtà penso che ognuno di noi, nel corso della propria esistenza, tenti di definire se stesso. È parte dell’esperienza umana. Ciascuno di noi ha bisogno di sentirsi legato a qualcosa, a un luogo, a una persona. Tuttavia non tutti sono disposti a mettersi in gioco per trovare quel luogo o quella persona. A 11 anni, Elizabeth, la mia protagonista, è disposta a mettersi in gioco. Si lascia andare per diventare se stessa. È una ragazza normale che si è data un compito straordinario, quello di trovare la sua identità e la sua vera ‘voce’. Il coraggio per compiere il viaggio che mi ha portato a realizzare questo film non è neanche lontanamente paragonabile a quello dimostrato da Elizabeth nell’intraprendere il viaggio che la porta a realizzare il suo sogno, ma è stata necessaria altrettanta fede e determinazione. Per non parlare del piccolo, divino intervento della nostra musa comune, Dolly Parton”.
