Synopsis
Great Britain in the sixties, as seen through the eyes of Nigel Slater, who thirty years later was to become one of the country’s favourite cookery writers. Even as a child, he displays a propensity for this profession and falls in love with food. Growing up in a home when everything tinned is best, Nigel craves real food and cookbooks. When his mother dies, he and his father are heartbroken. But time heals, and the charms and the pies of the new cleaner, Mrs. Potter, quickly bewitch Nigel’s father. To Nigel’s greater horror, Mrs. Potter moves in and the three move to the country. The only silver lining is the Domestic Science Class in his new school, where Nigel can finally shine. When he lands a job in the kitchen of a pub, his eyes are opened to a world of opportunity. But Mrs Potter won’t give up her supremacy in the kitchen without a fight.
Sinossi
L’Inghilterra degli anni ’60 vista con gli occhi di Nigel Slater, che 30 anni dopo diverrà uno dei più noti autori inglesi di libri di cucina. Fin da bambino, Nigel si innamora dell’arte culinaria. Crescendo in una casa dove il meglio che si mangi è cibo in scatola, sviluppa una forte passione per la gastronomia e i libri di cucina. Quando la madre muore, lascia Nigel e suo padre nella disperazione. Ma il tempo sana le ferite: presto il fascino e le torte della signora Potter ammaliano il padre di Nigel. La signora Potter va a vivere con loro e i tre si trasferiscono in campagna. Nigel ne è sconvolto e l’unica luce gli viene dalla nuova scuola e dallo studio di economia domestica, in cui può esprimere tutto il suo talento. Quando trova lavoro nella cucina di un pub, gli si apre dinanzi un mondo di opportunità. Ma la signora Potter non è disposta a lasciargli lo scettro della cucina senza lottare.
