Donovan Marsh
He began his career in the film industry in 1992. He has worked as a writer, director and editor in a variety of areas: TV shows, commercials, music videos. In 2005 he wrote, directed and edited his first feature film, DOLLARS AND WHITE PIPES. Afterwards he directed the TV film THE GOOD FIGHT.

Director’s statement
“It was a very daunting task having to take on an adaptation of South Africa’s best selling novel of all time. As writer-director, and together with the producers and author of the book, I made a decision to be as true to the novel as I possibly could. Unfortunately, the book, as brilliant as it is, is just a sequence of poignant and amusing diary entries with no real three act structure. The challenge was to create a structure for the film that didn’t feel like we had taken too many liberties with the book, while at the same time create a compelling movie experience for fans and people who had never read the book before. Stylistically, I wanted the film to feel real, but also capture the idiosyncratic point of view of its underdeveloped protagonist and his first year of growing pains at a prestigious private school. High school comedies are a very traded genre and I wanted this film to stand out because of its odd and quirky honesty. I wanted to create a mad and humorous world, but a world that you could believe in and identify with. A good example is the performance from John Cleese”.

“È stato difficile accettare di adattare il romanzo più venduto di tutti i tempi in Sudafrica. Come sceneggiatore e regista, insieme ai produttori e all’autore del libro, ho deciso di essere più fedele possibile al testo di partenza. Ma il romanzo, brillante com’è, è una sequenza di annotazioni da diario, ora commoventi ora divertenti, senza una classica struttura in tre atti. La sfida era quella di creare per il film una struttura che non ci facesse prendere troppe libertà, e al contempo quella di realizzare un film avvincente sia per gli amanti del libro sia per le persone che non l’hanno mai letto. Sul piano stilistico, volevo che il film fosse realistico, ma che catturasse anche il punto di vista idiosincratico dell’immaturo protagonista e il suo primo anno presso una prestigiosa scuola privata, con tutte le difficoltà iniziali. Le commedie liceali sono un genere molto diffuso, e volevo che questo film risaltasse per la sua particolare e bizzarra onestà. Volevo creare un mondo folle e umoristico, ma allo stesso tempo un mondo in cui si può credere e in cui ci si può identificare. Un buon esempio è dato dalla prova di John Cleese”.
