Karel Janák
Born in 1970. In 1993, Janák obtained his engineer’s degree at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University. Working as a system administrator in the Institute of Computer Technology, he started his studies at FAMU (Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts), specialization Direction, and in 2001 he successfully obtained his Master of Arts degree. At the outset of his career he shot mainly commercial spots. His first film was INTRUDERS IN COLORADO (2002), the children’s comedy which won 3 awards at the International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience in Chemnitz. He achieved many honours in making commercials, his most well-known ads include TV Nova trailers for Indiana Jones series (2004), The Independence Day (2003) or Titanic (2002). In 2004 with SNOWBOARDERS he won the Czech Lion Movie Award for the viewers’ best rated film. In March 2006, his new film THE RAFTERS was released in cinemas and in November, the same year, the RO(C)K PODVRAŤÁKŮ (Rock Con Artists) movie was released.

È nato nel 1970. Nel 1993, ottiene la laurea in ingegneria alla Facoltà di Scienze Nucleari e Ingegneria Fisica alla Czech Technology University. Mentre lavora come amministratore di sistema presso l'Istituto di Computer Technology, inizia i suoi studi alla FAMU (Scuola di Cinema e TV dell’Accademia delle Arti dello Spettacolo), specializzandosi in Regia nel 2001. All'inizio della sua carriera gira principalmente spot commerciali. Il suo primo film è stato INTRUDERS IN COLORADO (2002), commedia per bambini vincitrice di tre premi al Festival Internazionale del Cinema per Bambini e Giovani di Chemnitz. Anche per i suoi spot Karel ottiene numerosi riconoscimenti e i suoi lavori più noti sono i trailer di INDIANA JONES (2004), INDEPENDENCE DAY (2003) e TITANIC (2002), realizzati per la TV Nova. Nel 2004 con il film SNOWBOARDERS vince il Czech Lion Movie Award per il film più votato dal pubblico. Nel marzo 2006, il suo nuovo film, THE RAFTERS, esce nelle sale e nel novembre dello stesso anno è la volta di RO(C)K PODVRAŤÁKŮ (ROCK CON ARTISTS).
Director’s statement
“The idea of making a family historical film occurred to one of the co-producers from Three Brothers Production, Boris Krištof, nearly ten years ago, and with the LITTLE KNIGHTS’ TALE movie, in fact, he made his big dream come true. As far as myself is concerned, I became interested in the topic perhaps mainly because it is a completely different genre than those I have been working on so far. I was attracted by something so far untested in Bohemia, something which carries elements that I feel are close to me – action, adventure, humour, love and friendship. Also, a story set in the medieval times gives me a chance to play with means of expression that are entirely new to me. I was able to try out horse chasing scenes, combats, castle conquering and many other things which in contemporary films could hardly be done”.

“L’idea di realizzare un film storico per famiglie è venuta più o meno dieci anni fa a Boris Krištof, uno dei produttori della Three Brothers, e con LITTLE KNIGHTS’ TALE il suo sogno è divenuto realtà. Per quanto mi riguarda, mi sono interessato al progetto forse soprattutto perché appartiene a un genere completamente diverso da quelli su cui ho lavorato finora. Ero affascinato da qualcosa di così lontano, mai provato nell’Europa centrale, qualcosa che porta con sé elementi a me congeniali: azione, avventura, humour, amore e amicizia. Inoltre, una storia ambientata nel Medioevo mi offre la possibilità di confrontarmi con mezzi espressivi per me totalmente nuovi. Sono riuscito a realizzare scene di caccia a cavallo, di combattimenti, di assalti al castello, e molte altre cose che nei film contemporanei difficilmente possono essere fatte”.
