Oliver Schmitz
Schmitz, the child of German immigrants, was born in 1960 in Cape Town, South Africa. He graduated at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts. During his college years he worked at “scratch,” the legendary nightclub he co-founded in the early 80’s. In 1983 Schmitz began an apprenticeship as an editor in Johannesburg, and from 1985 to 1986 he worked as an editor for the WDR in Dortmund. He returned to South Africa, which was still segregated by apartheid, to direct his first feature film MAPANTSULA, shot - without the permission of the local authorities - in Soweto. The film was well received by South Africa’s black population and has gained a cult status (Un certain Regard, Cannes 1988, GFF 1994 in a section dedicated to South Africa). In the late 80’s Schmitz teamed with other documentary filmmakers directed nine documentaries. Among them JO’BURG STORIES. In 2000 he wrote and directed his second feature film, HIJACK STORIES. He moved to Germany, where he worked as television director. In 2005, Oliver and other directors, including the Coen Brothers and Gus Van Sant, directed the feature film PARIS JE T'AIME. At the moment he is working on the project of a new film, an adaptation of Russendisco by Wladimir Kaminer, one of the most successful young writers in Germany.

Si è laureato alla Michaelis School of Fine Arts e durante gli anni del college ha lavorato allo "Scratch", il leggendario night club da lui co-fondato nei primi anni '80. Nel 1983 Schmitz inizia un apprendistato come montatore a Johannesburg, e, trasferitosi in Germania dall’85 all’86 lavora come redattore per la WDR di Dortmund. Tornato in Sudafrica, dove vige ancora l’apartheid, dirige il primo lungometraggio, MAPANTSULA, girato, senza il permesso della autorità, a Soweto. Il film ben accolto dalla popolazione nera, presentato a Cannes (Un certain regard, 1988) diventa un cult premiato in tutto il mondo (nel 1994 e a Giffoni nella rassegna dedicata al Sudafrica). Alla fine degli anni '80 Schmitz, con altri documentaristi, dirige nove documentari tra i quali: STORIE DI JO'BURG. Nel 2000 scrive e dirige il secondo lungometraggio, HIJACK STORIES. In seguito si trasferisce nuovamente in Germania dove lavora come regista televisivo. Nel 2005, insieme a registi come i fratelli Coen e Gus Van Sant, dirige PARIS JE T’AIME. Attualmente lavora al progetto del suo prossimo film, un adattamento di Russendisco di Wladimir Kaminer, uno dei giovani scrittori tedeschi di maggior successo.

Director’s statement
"LIFE, ABOVE ALL sat on my desk for quite some time – unread. When I finally started to read it, I couldn’t put it down. The book tells a moving story. I thought that Allan Stratton hat found a good way to show us the impact of AIDS and HIV in Southern Africa. […] In the book Chanda is 16, but in reality, 16-year-olds have already lost their childlike qualities […] Allan’s novel is loosely set in the southern part of Africa, but we tried to be very specific when it came to language and culture. To me such details are very important because I want to make sure that I represent the reality correctly. If one accomplishes that then one automatically tells a universal story. […] In the western hemisphere people tend to generalize when they speak about Africa. We wanted to be very specific. That’s also why I decided not to shoot the film in English, but in a wonderful local language called Sepedi. It made the whole thing even more authentic".

“LIFE, ABOVE ALL è rimasto sulla mia scrivania – non letto - per un bel po’. Quando finalmente ho cominciato a leggerlo, non sono più riuscito a fermarmi. Il libro racconta una storia commovente. E penso che Allan Stratton abbia trovato un buon modo per mostrarci l'impatto di HIV e dell’AIDS in Sud Africa. [...] Nel libro Chanda ha 16, ma nella realtà una 16enne ha già perso le sue qualità infantili [...] Il romanzo di Allan è ambientato nell'Africa meridionale, senza ulteriori precisazioni, ma noi abbiamo cercato di essere molto specifici riguardo a lingua e cultura. Per me questi dettagli sono molto importanti perché voglio essere sicuro di rappresentare la realtà in modo corretto. Se si riesce in questo obiettivo, automaticamente si racconta una storia universale. [...] In occidente la gente tende a generalizzare quando si parla dell'Africa. Noi, invece, abbiamo voluto essere molto precisi. Questo è anche il motivo per cui abbiamo deciso di non girare il film in inglese, ma in una meravigliosa lingua locale chiamata Se pedi che ha reso il tutto ancora più autentico".
