Philippe Falardeau
Born in Hull in Québec in 1968, he studied politics and international relations in Ottawa. He begun his career as a contestant for the popular TV series LA COURSE DESTINATION MONDE, a contest where the participants tour the world making short films. He shot 20 films and ended up winning the race! In 2000 he directed his first feature film LA MOITIE GAUCHE DU FRIGO a big success in Canada and screened in numerous festivals. His second film CONGORAMA (2006), was presented in Director’s Fortnight in Cannes and in several other festivals. He is now working on the film adaptation of the stageplay Bashir Lazhar by Évelyne de la Chenelière.

Comincia la sua carriera cinematografica partecipando al programma LA COURSE DESTINATION MONDE, un concorso nel quale i concorrenti girano il mondo realizzando cortometraggi. Philippe gira 20 corti e vince la gara. Nel 2000 dirige il suo primo lungometraggio, LA MOITIE GAUCHE DU FRIGO, un successo in Canada, presentato anche in numerosi festival. Il secondo film, CONGORAMA (2006), viene inserito nella Quinzaine des Réalisateurs di Cannes e selezionato in numerosi altri eventi. Al momento Philippe lavora all’adattamento del lavoro teatrale Bashir Lazhar di Évelyne de la Chenelière.

Director’s statement
“When I read the novel C’EST PAS MOI, JE LE JURE! (IT’S NOT ME, I SWEAR!) published in 1997, I fell under the spell of the character, Leon. I decided to make a film based on it and I called the editor Pascal Assathiany. I saw a child character who took action instead of putting up with things. Unlike child martyrs, Leon creates his own misfortune. He takes responsibility for it. He controls his fight between good and evil with a sort of ‘surgical delinquency’. It’s his nature. He was born that way. His trade is self-destruction. He does not break into the home of his neighbors, the Mariniers, for money but because it’s an expression of what he is”.

“Quando ho letto il romanzo C’EST PAS MOI, JE LE JURE! (IT’S NOT ME, I SWEAR!), pubblicato nel 1997, sono rimasto incantato dal personaggio di Leon. Ho deciso di farne un film e ho chiamato l'editore Pascal Assathiany. Ho visto il personaggio di un bambino che agisce invece di sopportare le cose. A differenza dei bambini martiri, Leon crea le proprie disgrazie e se ne assume la responsabilità. Controlla la sua lotta tra il bene e il male con una sorta di ‘delinquenza chirurgica’. È la sua natura. È nato in quel modo. La sua autodistruzione è il suo mestiere. Non irrompe nella casa dei vicini, i Mariniers, in cerca di soldi, ma perché il gesto è un’espressione di ciò che egli è”.
