ROCCO PAPALEO

JULY 26

Biography

He was born in Lauria, Basilicata, in 1958, and later moved to Rome for university studies. There he took his first steps as a stand-up comedian, comic actor, theater actor, singer and musician. His debut in theater was in 1985, in Salvatore di Mattia’s show "Sussurri rapidi". He then became well-known thanks to the TV series "Classe di ferro" (1989/1991), and "Quelli della Speciale" (1992). On television he also worked in other miniseries such as "Giornalisti" (2000), "Cuore contro cuore" (2004), "Tigri di carta" (2008) and in the TV movies "Vola Sciusciù" (2000), "Padre Pio - Tra cielo e terra" (2000) and "Cuore di donna" (2002).

His film career began with "Il male oscuro" by Mario Monicelli (1989), followed by "Senza pelle" by Alessandro D’Alatri, "Con gli occhi chiusi" by Francesca Archibugi (1994), "I laureati" by Leonardo Pieraccioni, "Ferie d’agosto" by Paolo Virzì (1995), "Il barbiere di Rio" by Giovanni Veronesi and "Cresceranno i carciofi a Mimongo" by Fulvio Ottaviano (1996). In 1997 he played the lead role in the short film "Senza parole" by Antonello De Leo, Oscar candidate and winner of the David di Donatello the same year. The following year he was one of the protagonists of "Del perduto amore" by Michele Placido and in 1999 of "La bomba" by Giulio Base. The same year he also took part in the film "Viola bacia tutti" by Giovanni Veronesi.

With Leonardo Pieraccioni he started a long artistic partnership that led him to play several comic and surreal characters: "Il Paradiso all’improvviso" (2003), "Ti amo in tutte le lingue del mondo" (2005), "Una moglie bellissima" (2007), "Io e Marilyn" (2009) and "Finalmente la felicità" (2011). In 2011 he played the role of Checco Zalone’s father in "Che bella giornata" by Gennaro Nunziante, and in the same year he was one of the protagonists of Massimiliano Bruno’s debut film "Nessuno mi può giudicare", while the following year he played the lead role, with Luciana Littizzetto, in the new film by Lucio Pellegrini "È nata una star?"

In 2010 he made his directorial debut with "Basilicata coast to coast", in which Papaleo directed Alessandro Gassman, Paolo Briguglia, Max Gazzè, Giovanna Mezzogiorno and himself, winning the David di Donatello, the Nastro d’Argento and the Globo d’Oro as Best Debut Director in 2011. The film also obtained important awards for the soundtrack composed by Rita Marcotulli and Rocco Papaleo (author of all the songs), winning the David di Donatello, the Nastro d’Argento and the Ciak d’Oro for the Best Soundtrack. He started directing in 2013, with the film "Una piccola impresa meridionale", of which he was also author, with Valter Lupo, - with whom he also signed the novel of the same name - through which he brought on screen social prejudices and human crises.

In January 2014, he starred, with Paola Cortellesi and Luca Argentero, in "Un boss in salotto" by Luca Miniero, where he played the Boss Ciro, while in September of that same year he starred, with Sergio Castellitto, in "La buca", by Daniele Ciprì with Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. In the same year he was back in theaters with "Confusi e felici" by Massimiliano Bruno, with Claudio Bisio, Anna Foglietta, Marco Giallini, Pietro Sermonti, Paola Minaccioni, Caterina Guzzanti, while in November, along with Christian De Sica, he interpreted director Luca Miniero’s new challenge "La scuola più bella del mondo".

Also in 2014 he ventured for the first time in the direction of an advertisement, that of Birra Moretti Radler with the mustached man on a bicycle, the now historic Moretti face, Orso Maria Guerrini. Along with Michelle Hunziker, he hosted "Zelig"’s 18th-year opening episode. In January 2015 he was among the protagonists of "Il nome del figlio" (directed by Francesca Archibugi) with Alessandro Gassman, Micaela Ramazzotti, Valeria Golino and Luigi Lo Cascio. On stage he experimented the song theater, a formula that blends successfully songs and acting and where he best expressed his skills as an author and stage actor. Again on stage, in 2009 he toured his song-theater show entitled "Basilicata coast to coast" accompanied by the band formed by Giovanni di Cosimo (trumpet), Ciccio Accardo (guitar), Patrizio Sacco (double bass), Marco Monaco (drums) and himself (voice and guitar).

In 2011, he started a new theater tour entitled "Una piccola impresa meridionale" written with Valter Lupo, followed by another tour, in 2013/2014, which stages the show’s evolution, "Una piccola impresa meridionale bis". Rocco Papaleo has also dealt with music: in 1997 he released the album "Che non si sappia in giro", and, in 2012, "La mia parte imperfetta" (Sony Music). After winning the Gaber Prize, he became its host in the 2012 and 2013 editions. In 2012, Rocco Papaleo ventured into television hosting, joining Gianni Morandi in the 62nd edition of the Italian Song Festival in Sanremo. Since summer 2015 he worked on his third film as a director, "Onda su onda", released in theaters on 18 February 2016 starring, with the same Papaleo, Alessandro Gassman, Luz Cipriota, Massimiliano Gallo.

At the end of 2015, he hosted Rai 1 New Year’s show "L’anno che verrà", live from Matera with Amadeus. In 2016, he was in the cast of "Orecchie" by Alessandro Aronadio, "My Italy" by Bruno Colella, after that joining the hit "Che vuoi che sia" by Edoardo Leo. In 2017 he hit again the big screen with "The place", by Paolo Genovese, and "Il premio", by Alessandro Gasmann. In the meantime, he worked in "Bob & Marys" by Francesco Prisco, "Tu mi nascondi qualcosa" from Giuseppe Loconsole, and on the set of the latest film directed by Sergio Rubini.
