FINISH LINE

Category: Edition 2015

Synopsis
Josele runs marathons pushing his daughter María’s pushchair. She has Rett Syndrome, a highly incapacitating genetic disease that currently has no cure. Josele’s objective when crossing a finish line is to raise awareness on his daughter’s disease, to let it known that kids with rare diseases exist even though pharmaceutical companies do not research their treatment as they are not economically profitable. María’s mother and her two siblings complete the story. The documentary narrates a sports journey alongside the situation to which a rare disease subjects a family. With the diagnosis, each member of the family has their role and is affected at some level, be it physical, psychological, social.

Director’s statement
“The health or disease is not only a biological, physical or scientific concept, also, the health affects social and psychological dimension of people. What happens in a family when the diagnosis of a disease shows up? How do members relate? How do they internalize the ‘accident’? What do they think? What do they feel? What are their fears? What kind of personal resources have they to fight? Health is a psychological and social dimension that alters relationships, the concept of identity, the meaning of being a ‘father’, ‘mother’, ‘sister’ or ‘brother’.

“The documentary FINISH LINE is a ‘romantic’ story about an unknown reality: the family and the rare disease. The rare disease is an unknown and silent reality even though millions of people living around the world with a rare disease. And millions of people around the world are sentenced to die young or live on disability because pharmaceutical companies do not research their treatment as they are not economically profitable.

“However, in this dramatic reality, there are anonymous people, like the protagonists of the documentary FINISH LINE, who decide to make in positive to the extent of their ability.

“FINISH LINE is a story about the family’s ability to overcome and fight”.
