Synopsis

Zhigen, an old Chinese farmer, has lived alone in Beijing for over 20 years after moving to the city to allow his son Chongyi to attend university. He decides to make the long journey from Beijing to Yangshuo to honour the promise he made to his wife to bring back the bird that has been his only companion in the city. His daughter-in-law Qianing, a beautiful rich career woman, asks him to take along his granddaughter Renxin, an only child brought up in the lap of luxury. Whilegrandfather and granddaughter set out on their journey – one travelling back in time, the other discovering her roots – Chongyi and Qianing ponder the meaning of the life they have led in the sole pursuit of success and money.

Philippe MuylPhilippe Muyl

Born 1953, Lille (France). After graduating in philosophy, he studied Graphic Arts in Belgium, then at the High School of Advertising in Paris. Afterwards he worked in advertising as a copywriter and art director. In the 70s he made industrial films and commercials. In 1980 he directed his first short film, THE LEADERS SCHOOL (L’ECOLE DES CHEFS). In 1985 he shot his first feature film, THE TREE UNDER THE SEA (L’ARBRE SOUS LA MER). Among his other feature films are KITCHEN AND ADDICTIONS (CUISINE ET DÉPENDANCES, 1993), written and played by Jean-Pierre Bacri e Agnès Jaoui, TOUT DOIT DISPARAÎTRE (1997), A COW AND THE BOY (LA VACHE ET LE PRÉSIDENT, 2000), and THE BUTTERFLY (LE PAPILLON, 2002), which was screened in competition at the GFF 2003.
