Stefano Mordini
Born 1968, Marradi (Florence, Italy). In 1996 he directed his first short film, I LADRI, which was screened in the Venice Film Festival. In 2000 he shot PAZ ‘77, a documentary on Andrea Pazienza, which was presented at the Turin Film Festival. Then he made some documentaries about globalisation, among which L’ALLIEVO MODELLO (2002). In 2005 he made his debut feature film, SMALLTOWN (PROVINCIA MECCANICA), in running in Berlin. In 2007 he produced and directed IL CONFINE, a documentary on the Islamic community in Italy. In 2009 he shot COME MIO PADRE, a documentary about fatherhood in Italy from 1950 to today.

Nato nel 1968 a Marradi, Firenze. Nel 1996 dirige il suo primo cortometraggio, I LADRI, che partecipa alla Mostra di Venezia. Nel 2000 gira PAZ ‘77, documentario su Andrea Pazienza, presentato al Festival di Torino. In seguito firma alcuni documentari sul tema della globalizzazione, tra cui L’ALLIEVO MODELLO (2002). Nel 2005 esordisce nel lungometraggio con PROVINCIA MECCANICA, in concorso al Festival di Berlino. Nel 2007 produce e dirige IL CONFINE, documentario sulle comunità islamiche in Italia. Nel 2009 realizza COME MIO PADRE, documentario sulla paternità in Italia dal 1950 a oggi.
Director’s statement
“We have gone beyond the wall which contains, hides and stops any assistance given to the hard work of men and women. We have observed the power and the greatness of the machine which transforms, and the man who puts the final touches. We have tried to film the enemy, but while we waited for it to appear, we didn’t find it. The enemy cannot be found inside factories, he is outside of it, far away. As much as we could, we tried to lend a listening ear, we tried to organize the least amount possible, while trying to blur the lines between stage and real life, between recited and lived situations. And then we stopped and met the two girls from the novel, inside their own environments, in their own light, with the clothes they had chosen for themselves, with their own voice tone, their rhythm, their music, their own point of view, and their own words. We did this before starting to film. What happened afterwards was just a consequence. ‘Shadow changes position at the same time as light’”.

“Abbiamo oltrepassato il muro, quello che confina, che nasconde e impedisce di assistere al lavoro degli uomini e delle donne. Abbiamo osservato la potenza e la grandezza della macchina che trasforma e la fatica dell’uomo che finalizza. Abbiamo cercato di filmare il nemico, ma appostati in attesa che comparisse, non lo abbiamo trovato. Dentro la fabbrica il nemico non c’è, è fuori, lontano. Abbiamo ascoltato quanto più potevamo, abbiamo cercato di organizzare il meno possibile provando a confondere la frontiera tra scena e vita, tra situazione recitata e vissuta. E poi ci siamo fermati e abbiamo incontrato le due ragazze del romanzo, nei loro ambienti, nella loro luce, con i vestiti che hanno scelto di mettersi, con il loro tono di voce, il loro ritmo, la loro musica, il loro punto di vista, con le loro parole. Abbiamo fatto questo prima di filmare. Quello che è successo dopo è stata solo una conseguenza. ‘L´ombra si sposta nello stesso momento della luce’”.
