12-year-old Aimé, nicknamed Machine Gun (Mitraillette), is a kid from Cité Rose (Asphalt Playground), a housing project outside Paris, where families live alongside criminals and mothers try to keep their kids out of trouble. It’s a place that Machine Gun would never leave, and right now he has a crush on Oceane, the prettiest girl in his class. In the building across the way lives Mohawk, his best friend, a kid he’s known since kindergarten. There’s also Machine Gun’s cousin Isma, 16, who admires Narcisse, the neighbourhood boss, and who spends his days on rooftops, being a lookout for drug dealers. And his brother Djibril, 22, the family’s pride, a brilliant law student who dreams of the good life and has a troubled relationship with his girlfriend Lola, a white upper-middle class girl. Their destinies are tied together, in the middle of the neighbourhood, where dreams sometimes pay cash.
Aimé, 12 anni, detto Mitraillette (Mitragliatrice), abita nella Cité Rose, una banlieu fuori Parigi, dove le famiglie vivono a fianco dei criminali e le madri cercano di tenere i figli lontani dai guai. È un posto che Mitraillette non lascerebbe per niente al mondo, soprattutto ora che si è preso una cotta per Oceane, la più bella della classe. Nel palazzo dirimpetto vive Mohawk, il migliore amico di Mitraillette dai tempi dell’asilo. C’è poi il cugino di Mitraillette, Isma, 16 anni, che ammira il boss del quartiere, Narcisse, e passa il tempo sui tetti, a far da palo agli spacciatori. E c’è infine il fratello di Isma, Djibril, 22 anni, l’orgoglio della famiglia, brillante studente di legge che sogna una vita diversa e ha un rapporto turbolento con la fidanzata, Lola, bianca, di famiglia borghese. I destini di questi personaggi si intrecciano sullo sfondo del loro quartiere, dove a volte i sogni si pagano.
